About West Wales
I’d been promising myself a proper slow-down for months, so the drive down to Glamping Pod 5 on the Gower felt like the first proper exhale of the year. The sat-nav led me happily along the coast road until I missed the turning for the lane and ended up doing an awkward three-point turn in someone’s gateway while a sheep watched from the hedge. Five minutes later I bumped along the gravel and there it was: a neat timber pod tucked behind a low stone wall, its little deck already catching the afternoon sun.

I parked, killed the engine, and just sat for a moment listening to nothing but birds and the distant hush of the sea. The key was exactly where the host had promised—under the pot of lavender—and the door opened with that satisfying wooden clunk that says you’ve arrived somewhere that doesn’t expect anything from you. Inside, the space was simple and warm: a wide bed dressed in crisp linen, a couple of squashy armchairs, and a kettle already filled and ready. I dropped my bag, kicked off my shoes, and stepped straight back outside again because the garden looked far too inviting to ignore.

A wooden table and two mismatched chairs sat on the grass, half in shade from a twisted apple tree. I made tea, carried it out, and spent the rest of that first afternoon doing exactly nothing. A robin hopped along the fence while I read the same page of my book three times, and every time a car passed on the lane it felt like a gentle reminder that the rest of the world was still turning, just not very loudly. Later I wandered the short path behind the pod that leads to a small paddock; the evening light turned the grass gold and I stood there long enough to notice my shoulders had dropped a good inch since leaving the car.

The next morning I woke to soft rain on the roof—proper Welsh drizzle that somehow still feels kind—and decided the weather was an invitation rather than an obstacle. I stayed in bed with coffee and the novel I’d been meaning to finish, listening to the drops against the skylight and the occasional bleat from a nearby field. When the rain eased I pulled on wellies and walked the half-mile lane into the nearest village, where a tiny shop sold local cheese and newspapers. I bought both, plus a postcard I never got round to writing, and wandered back at the pace of someone with nowhere else to be.

Back at the pod the garden had dried enough for me to claim the deckchair again. I set the cheese and a crusty roll on a board, poured a glass of wine that tasted better for being drunk outdoors, and watched a bumblebee work its way along a clump of lavender. The only plan I’d made was to maybe light the little fire-pit once it got dark, but even that felt optional. Mostly I just sat, sometimes reading, sometimes simply noticing how rarely I give myself permission to stop moving.

On the final morning I woke early enough to catch the mist lifting off the fields. I made porridge on the little hob and carried the bowl outside, balancing it on my knees while the sun finally broke through. A neighbour’s dog trotted past on its morning circuit and gave me a polite wag, as if approving of my stillness. I realised I’d spent three days barely leaving the garden and the lane, yet the sense of having been away was stronger than any rushed city break I could remember. Packing the car felt oddly reluctant; I kept finding one more reason to linger on the deck, one more sip of tea, one more page. As I finally turned the key in the ignition I caught myself smiling at the sheep in the hedge—same one, I think—and wondered how long I could stretch the feeling of doing almost nothing before real life caught up again.
