Luxury Holiday Lodges in South West England

There is something really comforting about a wooden lodge holiday in the South West of England. Maybe it is the way the rain sounds different against timber than it does against brick, or perhaps it is just the excuse to wear the same jumper for four days without anyone raising an eyebrow. Whatever the reason, swapping a hotel corridor for a decked veranda looking out over pine trees or rolling Devon hills feels less like a change of scenery and more like a change of pace.

The South West has cornered the market on this kind of escape. Cornwall pulls in the crowds with lodges tucked between fishing villages and Atlantic coastlines, places where you can fry bacon at ten in the morning while staring at the sea through floor to ceiling windows. Devon offers a similar charm but with steeper lanes and cream teas waiting in nearby barn cafés. Somerset brings a quieter mood, particularly around the Quantocks or Exmoor, where the lodges sit among ancient woodland and the only traffic jam involves pheasants. Dorset rounds things off with its Jurassic coastline, where a hot tub on the decking feels like a genuine achievement after a day of clambering over limestone.

The lodges themselves run the full spectrum from glorified garden shed to outright palace. On the budget end, you are looking at clean, compact cabins with a small kitchenette, a television the size of a laptop screen, and a barbecue that has definitely seen better summers. They are perfectly fine if your plan is to hike until your legs ache and then collapse into bed. At the other extreme, the luxury lodges have underfloor heating, rainfall showers, and outdoor hot tubs that bubble away while you drink something expensive and local. Some even come with a private chef option, though in my opinion that rather defeats the point of wearing slippers until midday.

I stayed in one near Lynton a couple of years ago, halfway up a lane so narrow that the sat nav simply gave up and asked me to phone a human. The first night, I sat on the deck with a cup of tea that had gone lukewarm because I had been staring at the valley for twenty minutes without really seeing it. It struck me how rarely I allow myself to do absolutely nothing. There was no email demanding attention, no queue to join, no reason to be anywhere else. It felt indulgent in a way that a city break never quite manages, as though I had briefly stepped out of my own life to check it was still there.

Of course, the romance wears thin around the time the WiFi cuts out during an important football match, or when you realise the nearest shop is a twenty minute drive and you have forgotten milk. Remote lodges specialise in these small humiliations. The boiler will make a noise like a dying whale at two in the morning. A determined family of field mice might stage a raid on your cereal supplies. You will misjudge the lane width and spend ten minutes reversing while a local farmer watches with the patient expression of a man who has seen this exact scene eighty times before. These moments are annoying in the moment and hilarious by the time you are back on the motorway heading home.

That is the strange alchemy of a wooden lodge holiday in this corner of the country. It is not perfect. It is not polished. But it gives you space to breathe, room to get slightly lost, and the kind of memories that improve with retelling. If you are lucky, you might even come back with working WiFi and a full pint of milk.
