About West Wales
We set off from our house in the rain, which felt about right for a Welsh weekend, and promptly took the wrong turning at the roundabout near Port Eynon. By the time we’d doubled back, the kids were already bickering over who got to hold the map, and I’d managed to spill half a takeaway coffee down my jumper. Still, the moment we pulled into the gravel driveway of Glamping Pod 4 Gower, everything else seemed to slide away.

The pod sat tucked at the edge of a quiet garden, its cedar cladding already darkening in the drizzle, with a little wooden deck that looked straight out towards the dunes. Our boys tumbled out first, immediately claiming the hammock strung between two scrubby pines, while my partner and I wrestled with the key safe and tried not to laugh at the way the door stuck on the first push. Inside, it was warm and pine-scented, the kind of space that makes you kick your shoes off straight away. Two neat bunks lined one wall, a tiny kitchenette hugged the other, and a wood-burner waited with a basket of logs that looked just the right size for small, enthusiastic firelighters.

We’d barely unpacked the cool bag before the eldest discovered the outdoor shower—more of a glorified hosepipe with good intentions—and declared it the best thing about the trip. I watched him chase his brother round the deck in bare feet, both of them shrieking whenever the water hit cold, and felt that familiar mix of pride and mild panic that comes with parenting small people near anything that could get muddy.

Later, once the rain eased, we wandered the short path behind the garden to the edge of the dunes. The boys collected shells and bits of driftwood, pockets bulging, while we followed at a slower pace, breathing in the salt air and listening to the distant hush of the sea. Back at the pod, tea was brewed on the little two-ring hob, and we ate cheese sandwiches at the picnic table, brushing crumbs off the bench whenever the breeze picked up. There was no rush, no itinerary, just the soft clink of mugs and the occasional thump of a football against the fence.

That evening, after the children had finally settled in their bunks—still whispering about tomorrow’s plan to build a den from driftwood—I sat on the deck with a blanket round my shoulders. The pod felt smaller in the dark, cosier somehow, and I found myself thinking how easy it is to forget that three days away doesn’t need to be packed with activities. Sometimes the best bits are just the small, slightly chaotic ones: the wrong turning, the spilled coffee, the outdoor shower that makes everyone laugh. As the stars came out over the dunes, I realised that this little wooden box, with its simple comforts and occasional mishaps, was exactly the kind of place that lets you slow down without even noticing you’ve done it.
