The drive down to Cabin No. 7 took longer than I’d expected, thanks to a wrong turning just outside Port Talbot that sent me looping through a quiet housing estate and back onto the same roundabout twice. By the time I pulled up the gravel track, the light was already fading and my phone had died, but the sight of the little wooden cabin tucked between tall ferns lifted my mood straight away.

I fumbled with the key safe in the dusk, dropped it once, and laughed at myself for packing three different jumpers yet forgetting a torch. Inside, the space felt instantly welcoming: a low-beamed sitting room with a wood burner already laid, a kitchen corner stocked with proper mugs and a kettle that whistled properly, and a sofa that looked as though it had hosted plenty of afternoon naps.

I woke the next morning to birdsong and soft rain tapping the tin roof. Rather than rushing out, I stayed in bed with a book until the light shifted, then wandered into the garden with a mug of tea. The grass was damp underfoot, the air smelled of wet earth and pine, and a wicker chair under the little shelter proved perfect for watching nothing in particular. A robin hopped along the fence as though it owned the place, and I found myself smiling at how content I already felt doing so little.

That first full day set the tone. I wandered no more than a mile or so along the lane, past dripping hedgerows and the occasional sheep peering over a gate, before turning back when the clouds thickened. Lunch was a slow affair of local cheese and bread eaten at the kitchen table while rain streaked the windows. In the afternoon I lit the wood burner, even though it wasn’t cold, simply because the crackle made the room feel cosier. The rest of the daylight slipped by in chapters of my book and occasional glances outside at the shifting sky.

The second day followed the same gentle rhythm. I made coffee, sat on the step to watch a blackbird tug at a worm, then pottered in the garden pulling a few stray weeds that didn’t really need pulling. Mid-morning I drove the short distance to the nearest village shop for milk and ended up chatting with the woman behind the counter about the best quiet walks nearby. She recommended a footpath that started just beyond the cabins, so after lunch I followed it for half an hour, turning back when my legs reminded me I was on holiday, not training.

Back at the cabin I noticed how little I missed the usual rush. There was no signal to speak of, which meant no scrolling, and the absence felt oddly freeing. I spent the evening with the door propped open, listening to the woods settle as the light faded, and realised I hadn’t checked the time properly since breakfast.

On the final morning I packed slowly, pausing every few minutes to look out at the garden one last time. The ferns glistened after another soft shower, and the robin was back on the fence. I thought about how easily three days had stretched into something spacious, how little I’d done and how much that had mattered. As I locked the door and carried my bag to the car, I caught myself already planning the next visit, not for any particular reason except to sit still again among the trees.
