We’d barely made it past the sign for Heritage Park before the sat-nav decided to have a sulk, leaving us circling the same roundabout twice and laughing at our own hopeless sense of direction. By the time we finally bumped down the short lane to the cottage, the sky had turned that soft, slate-grey Welsh afternoon light that always makes everything look a little more romantic than it really is. Our first impression was of a neat row of pale stone cottages tucked behind a low hedge, windows glowing with warm lamplight even though it was barely teatime.

The key safe was exactly where the instructions promised, but in my rush to grab the bags I managed to drop the whole bundle of keys straight into a puddle by the doorstep. Of course they landed with an unhelpful plop, and I spent an undignified minute fishing them out while my partner tried not to smirk too obviously. Wet keys in hand, we stepped inside to the faint smell of woodsmoke and fresh linen, the sort of comforting scent that makes you feel instantly welcome. The living room was small but thoughtfully arranged: a squashy sofa facing a wood-burner, a low coffee table already stacked with local leaflets, and a view straight out to the little shared garden where a robin was busy on the bird feeder.

We dumped our bags and wandered through to the kitchen, where a kettle and a tin of Welsh cakes waited like an invitation. I flicked the switch, and while the water heated I stood at the window watching the last of the day fade over the park’s neat lawns. It felt almost too quiet after the M4 and the A477, the kind of quiet that makes you notice your own shoulders dropping. My partner wandered outside to test the little patio chairs and came back grinning, reporting that the air smelled of cut grass and the sea even though we were still a mile or so inland.

After tea we strolled the short path that loops around Heritage Park itself, nodding hello to a couple walking their spaniel and pausing to read the information board about the old estate that once stood here. The light was fading fast, but the cottages looked cosy with their curtains drawn and wood-smoke drifting from a couple of chimneys. Back at our door I realised I’d left the wet keys on the draining board; they’d already begun to rust at the edges, a tiny souvenir of our slightly chaotic arrival.

We cooked a simple supper of sausages and mash, the kind of meal that tastes better when you’re tired and slightly damp. Sitting at the little kitchen table, listening to the occasional hoot of an owl from the trees behind the park, I found myself thinking how strange it is that the best holidays often start with small disasters. The dropped keys, the wrong turn, the puddle—all of it had somehow made the moment we finally stepped inside feel more like coming home than simply checking in. By the time we climbed the narrow stairs to the bedroom, the cottage already felt like ours.
