We set off from Cardiff with the boot packed and the sat-nav insisting we’d be there in just over an hour, which felt optimistic given the single-track roads. Ten minutes from Narberth the heavens opened, and I managed to step straight into a puddle the size of a paddling pool while unloading the bags, so my trainers squelched for the rest of the afternoon. By the time we found the little lane and the neat wooden sign for 2 Bed Lodge, I was half-damp and fully ready for a cuppa.

The cottage sat at the end of a short gravel drive, tucked behind a hedge that smelled of damp moss and late honeysuckle. It looked exactly as the pictures had promised: pale stone walls, a slate roof, and a little porch where two wooden chairs waited under a striped awning. Inside, the kitchen was small but perfectly kitted out, with a chunky wooden table that could seat four if nobody minded elbows. We dropped the bags, flicked the kettle on, and immediately started planning the next meal.

That first evening we walked the five-minute path into Narberth proper, following the smell of frying onions until we reached The Angel. The pub was busy with locals still in work boots, and we squeezed onto a bench near the fireplace. Their fish and chips arrived on a wooden board, the batter so crisp it crackled when you cut it, and the chips were proper chunky ones that needed malt vinegar in generous splashes. We stayed for a second round, chatting with the barman about the best place to buy fresh crab the next morning.

Saturday began with a proper market morning. Narberth’s weekly market fills the high street with stalls selling everything from local honey to crusty sourdough, and we arrived just as the cheese man was setting out samples. We came away with a round of Perl Las, a loaf still warm from the oven, and a paper bag of fat pink prawns from the fishmonger who’d driven them up from Saundersfoot that same dawn. Back at the lodge the kitchen smelled of coffee and toast while we unpacked our haul, spreading everything across the table like we were planning a banquet rather than lunch for two.

Cooking in someone else’s kitchen always feels a bit like borrowing a friend’s favourite jumper; you want to look after it but you’re never quite sure where the teaspoons live. I managed to burn the garlic while trying to make a quick prawn linguine, and the smoke alarm gave one half-hearted chirp before I flapped it quiet with a tea towel. We ate anyway, sitting on the porch steps with the plates balanced on our knees, watching a blackbird hop along the hedge. The prawns were sweet enough to forgive the slightly over-toasty garlic, and the wine we’d picked up from the corner shop helped the flavour along nicely.

Sunday lunch was the sort of meal that makes you wonder why anyone ever eats out. We’d booked a table at The Grove, just on the edge of Narberth, and arrived to find the dining room already full of families and Sunday walkers. The roast beef came with Yorkshire puddings that could have doubled as crash helmets, and the gravy was dark and glossy enough to make conversation pause for a moment. After pudding—sticky toffee with extra cream—we wandered back slowly, stopping at the little bakery for a couple of Welsh cakes to have with tea later.

By Monday morning the cottage already felt familiar, the way rented places sometimes do when you’ve cooked three meals in them. I stood at the sink washing up the last of the breakfast things and caught myself thinking about how easily a weekend can stretch into something that feels like a proper little life. The trainers were still damp in the porch, the market bag was empty on the table, and outside the lane was quiet again. We loaded the car without any further puddle incidents, but I left the windows down for a minute just to let the smell of toast and coffee linger a bit longer.
