About Tenby
The place was small in the best possible way: one generous bedroom at the back with a firm bed that looked like it had actually been made with care, a living room that doubled as dining space, and a kitchen corner just big enough for two adults and one small child to bump elbows without anyone getting cross. Our daughter immediately claimed the sofa as her “reading den,” scattering three soft toys across it before we’d even unpacked the car. I found myself smiling at how quickly the chaos of home life had simply relocated itself to a different postcode. That first evening we didn’t do much. After a quick shop in the village for milk, bread and the obligatory Welsh cakes, we ate at the little table by the window while the light outside slowly turned the colour of weak tea. The garden, such as it was, sloped gently toward a low fence and gave us a view of quiet fields rather than the sea; somehow that felt exactly right for a weekend when none of us wanted to rush anywhere. The dog curled up on the mat by the door and sighed the deep sigh of a creature who’d already decided this new rug met his standards. Breakfast the next morning was the sort of unhurried affair that only happens when you’re not trying to catch a train. We took turns using the single bathroom, leaving damp towels in a cheerful pile, and ate toast standing up because the table was already occupied by colouring books. I caught myself watching my partner butter a slice for our daughter with the same careful concentration she usually reserves for work emails, and it struck me how rare it is these days to see everyone slowed down enough to notice those small kindnesses. We spent the afternoon wandering the short stretch of coastal path that begins just outside Kilgetty, the dog zig-zagging between our legs until he flopped dramatically in a patch of sunlight. Back at the lodge the heating clicked on with a friendly clunk and we lit the little wood-burner, even though the evening wasn’t especially cold; there’s something about a real fire that makes any room feel instantly lived-in. Supper was pasta from the tiny kitchen, eaten with the door propped open so the evening air could drift in, carrying the faint scent of cut grass from a neighbouring field. By the third morning the lodge already felt familiar in the slightly scruffy way a favourite jumper does. The single bed was rumpled, the sofa cushions had migrated to the floor, and someone (probably me) had left a half-read newspaper on the kitchen counter. Packing up took longer than it should have because our daughter kept discovering new corners to explore, and I found myself pausing at the door, keys in hand, oddly reluctant to leave the small, slightly untidy space we’d only borrowed for three days. On the drive home I realised the mishap on the way in had already become family lore—“remember when Dad got lost before we’d even arrived?”—and that the lodge itself had done exactly what we’d hoped: given us three days of ordinary life in a different wrapper. No grand adventures, just the gentle rhythm of toast, walks, and the occasional barked order from the dog. As the fields slid past the car window I caught myself thinking that sometimes the best kind of holiday is the one that lets you practise being a slightly calmer version of yourself, even if only for a weekend. |
