About South Wales
We’d barely left the M4 when the satnav decided to have a sulk and reroute us down a single-track lane that turned out to be somebody’s driveway. By the time we’d reversed past a bemused sheep and found the right turning, the boot was already half-open and a rogue carrier bag of snacks had made a break for it across the tarmac. Not the most elegant start to a three-day escape, but at least the rain held off.

Chestnut itself sits on the edge of Cowbridge, tucked behind a low stone wall and a hedge that looked as though it had been trimmed with nail scissors. The moment we pulled onto the gravel, the front door swung open as if the cottage had been expecting us all along. Warm light spilled onto the drive, and the faint scent of woodsmoke drifted out to meet us. I stepped inside still clutching the escaped packet of crisps and felt the day’s tension slip a notch.

The sitting room was small in the best way—low ceilings, a couple of squashy sofas, and a wood-burner already crackling. Someone had left a neat stack of logs and a handwritten note about the wi-fi password, which felt oddly personal. Through the leaded window I could see the back garden sloping gently toward fields, the sort of view that makes you forget you only drove an hour and a half from home. My partner disappeared upstairs to claim the bedroom with the better pillow situation, while I stood in the kitchen doorway admiring the honest-to-goodness Aga and the little table set for two. It was the sort of kitchen where you instinctively reach for the kettle.

We’d planned a gentle wander into Cowbridge for supper, but the small mishap with the satnav had eaten more time than we realised, so instead we raided the welcome hamper and made do with crusty bread, local cheese, and a bottle of Welsh red we’d picked up on the way. Sitting at that little table, listening to the occasional car pass on the lane outside, I felt a quiet satisfaction that surprised me. I’m usually the one who needs an itinerary and a backup plan; tonight the lack of either felt like a relief rather than a failure.

Later, once the wood-burner had settled into a steady glow, I stepped outside for a breath of cool air. The sky was clear enough to show a handful of stars, and somewhere nearby an owl made its presence known. I thought about how easy it is to arrive somewhere new and immediately start measuring it against expectations—perfect parking, flawless directions, no rogue snacks. Yet here we were, slightly dishevelled and already at home. The cottage didn’t seem to mind our chaotic entrance; if anything, it looked as though it had seen worse and simply got the kettle on anyway.

By the time we turned in, the only plan left was to see what the morning brought. And for once, that felt like plenty.
