We set off from Cardiff in the usual mid-morning muddle, the boot half-full of wellies and half-empty packets of biscuits, only to realise ten minutes later that the dog’s lead was still hanging on the garden gate. A quick U-turn and a bit of gentle bickering later, we were back on the road, heading west along the coast road towards Swansea.

The sat-nav eventually spat us out onto a narrow lane lined with hedgerows that scratched the car doors like an over-enthusiastic cat. When we finally pulled up outside Barn 3, the first thing that struck me was how quietly it sat in the yard, a low stone building with a green door and a couple of battered deckchairs already waiting on the little patio. The children tumbled out before the engine had cooled, immediately claiming the rope swing that hung from the old oak at the edge of the paddock.

Inside, the place felt properly lived-in in the best way: a worn sofa that swallowed you whole, a wood-burner already stocked with logs, and a kitchen table big enough for board games and muddy boots. We unpacked in that lazy holiday rhythm—someone always forgetting where the tea bags had gone, someone else discovering the tin of local biscuits left by the owners. Through the open door we could hear nothing but birdsong and the occasional bleat from the field next door.

Lunch was a slapdash picnic on the patio, bread and cheese bought from the farm shop five minutes up the lane. The kids disappeared with a football and returned covered in grass stains, while my partner and I sat with mugs of tea watching the clouds drift over the Gower hills. Every so often a tractor rumbled past on the lane, its driver offering a cheerful wave that felt like an invitation to slow down.

Later, we wandered the short footpath that runs behind the barns and drops into a sheltered valley. The dog raced ahead, ears flapping, while we picked blackberries for the evening’s crumble. Back at the barn, the wood-burner was crackling nicely and the children were already in their pyjamas, arguing gently over who got the top bunk. I found myself standing in the doorway for a moment, tea in hand, listening to the soft domestic chaos and wondering why we don’t do this sort of nothing more often.
