We’d barely turned off the A465 when the sat-nav decided to send us down a single-track lane that narrowed with every bend. I was still laughing about the “shortcut” when the hedge brushed the wing mirror and we hit a puddle the size of a small pond. Mud sprayed up like a garden sprinkler, and by the time we pulled into the gravel drive of 1 Bed Lodge, our windscreen looked like a Jackson Pollock in brown.

The lodge itself sat low and neat among the Herefordshire fields, its timber cladding already glowing in the late-afternoon sun. I killed the engine, took one look at the state of the car, and immediately felt the three-hour drive settle in my shoulders. The key safe was exactly where the instructions promised, tucked behind the planter by the front door. One wrong combination later and we were still wrestling with it when the owner’s dog trotted over from the farmhouse next door, tail wagging like he’d been expecting us all afternoon.

Inside, the space felt bigger than the photos suggested. A squashy sofa faced a wood-burner already stacked with logs, and the open kitchenette had everything we needed for the next few days: a proper kettle, decent mugs, and a little welcome pack of local tea and biscuits. The bedroom was tucked behind a sliding door, the bed made up with crisp white linen that smelled faintly of lavender. I dropped our bags, kicked off my muddy boots by the mat, and wandered straight back outside.

A wooden picnic bench sat under a crab-apple tree, and beyond it the garden sloped gently down to a small stream. The air was cool and smelled of wet grass and wood smoke from somewhere nearby. Standing there, watching a robin hop along the fence, I felt the last of the motorway tension slip away. We’d only just arrived, yet the place already felt like it had been waiting for us.

We unpacked in that leisurely way you do on the first evening of a short break—shoes off, kettle on, phone on silent. I kept glancing out of the window at the fields rolling away toward the Black Mountains, the sky streaked with pink. There was something quietly reassuring about knowing we had nowhere else to be. The mishap on the lane already felt like part of the story rather than a problem.

Later, with mugs of tea in hand, we sat on the bench and listened to the stream. A neighbour’s sheep bleated from the far hedge, and somewhere a tractor hummed its way home. I realised I’d spent most of the drive worrying about whether the lodge would live up to the pictures; now I was wondering how we’d tear ourselves away in three days’ time.
