About Sun View Lodge.
Nestled in historic woodland and part of the Snowdonia Mountains is the delightful village of Llanbedr, which boats golden beaches and a mild climate. This pretty village is home to wonderful birds and wildlife, local shops, mountain walks, bike hire and two superb pubs. Nearby is the town of Harlech, which hosts the 13the century World Heritage Site of Harlech Castle and Royal St. David's course for golfing enthusiasts. Nearby attractions.
About Snowdonia
Pulling up to Sun View Lodge around teatime, I was greeted by the owner, Dai, a proper character with a beard like a Brillo pad and eyes twinkling with mischief. He's lived in Llanbedr his whole life, born in a nearby farm during a blizzard that "nearly snowed us in till Easter," he reckoned. As he handed over the keys, he launched into a yarn about the lodge's name: "Sun View? Aye, on a clear day you can see the sun from here—once a year!" We both cracked up. Dai's the sort who treats every guest like a long-lost mate, insisting I try his mam's bara brith recipe scribbled on a fag packet. "None of that shop-bought rubbish," he winked. That first chat set the tone—proper warm Welsh welcome, none of your stiff hotel bollocks. Unpacking in the lodge felt like stepping into a hug. Compact but spotless, with a wood burner begging for a fire and views straight out to the hills that make Snowdonia magic. But I barely got my boots off before wandering down to the village shop for milk. There I met Mrs. Evans, the octogenarian behind the counter who's been manning it since Elvis was in short trousers. "New face! Staying at Sun View, eh? Mind the ghosts—they only come out on full moons," she deadpanned, her eyes dancing. Turned out her "ghosts" were just the neighbours' cats yowling at night, but she spun it into a full-blown tale of smugglers from the old coaching days. I was hooked, buying extra Hobnobs just to hear more. "Locals like us keep the place alive," she said, tapping her nose. Charming, that—made me feel right at home. Next morning, first impressions still buzzing, I nipped to the post office for stamps. Enter Geraint, the postie兼pub landlord from the Tan-y-Castell up the road. He's built like a rugby prop and talks a mile a minute about everything from lambing season disasters to why Welsh rugby refs are "always robbing us blind." Over a brew he pressed on me—"No charge for yarns!"—he grilled me on my city life. "London? Too many suits, not enough sheep!" We bantered about the best walking spots nearby, him swearing by the paths up to the Roman steps, just a short stroll away. "Quiet up there, mind—perfect for pondering life's bollocks," he grinned. His no-nonsense humour had me in stitches, especially when he confessed to once delivering mail barefoot after losing a bet on the Six Nations. That evening, back at the lodge, I bumped into Tommo, the shepherd from the farm next door, fixing a fence. Wild hair, wellies caked in mud, he looked like he'd stepped out of a Ray Mears book. "Fancy a pint later?" he hollered. Over at the pub, it was more of the same—Tommo regaling us with tales of his dog, Shep, who once herded a flock straight into a tourist's picnic. "Ruined their sarnies, but made their day!" The locals' easy craic, peppered with self-deprecating jabs at the weather ("Rain today? Shocking—it's Wales!") made the place feel alive. Sitting by the fire that night, nursing a cuppa, I had a quiet moment of reflection. In the rush of everyday life, I forget how these chance chats with proper characters recharge the soul. Sun View Lodge isn't just bricks and mortar; it's a front-row seat to Llanbedr's eccentrics, whose stories turned my first impressions into pure gold. Can't wait to go back—mishap sheep and all. |
