About Snowdonia
I finally made it to Riverside Hideout after what felt like the scenic route from hell – or at least from Bangor, where I'd picked up the keys. Picture this: I'm trundling along those narrow Snowdonia lanes in my little hire car, sat-nav confidently directing me towards the River Cegni, windows down to catch that crisp Welsh air laced with sheep poo and wild garlic. It's meant to be idyllic, right? But no, about two miles out, I hit a classic British summer cock-up: a rogue lamb decides my windscreen is the perfect spot for a nap. Thwack! The little woolly bugger bounces off like a furry pinball, leaving me with a splattered windscreen and a heart rate that could power the National Grid. I pull over near some tumbling waterfalls – proper Snowdonia drama – and spend 15 minutes wiping it down with a Costa cup and my emergency tissues. "Welcome to Wales," I mutter, chuckling at my own daft luck. At least it wasn't a full-on flock.

By the time I rumble over the cute stone bridge into the hideout's garden, I'm half an hour late and feeling like I've auditioned for a Ray Mears survival show. But blimey, what a payoff. There she is, this cosy stone cottage tucked right on the riverbank, with the water gurgling past like it's whispering secrets. I park up on the gravel – crunching under the tyres in that satisfying way – and lug my bags down the winding path, dodging ferns and those massive slate slabs that scream "proper Welsh countryside." The door's a sturdy oak thing with a brass knocker shaped like a dragon, because of course it is. Fumble with the key, push it open, and I'm hit with that instant holiday hug: wood-burner stacked with logs, plush sofas begging for a collapse, and floor-to-ceiling windows framing the river like a living painting.

First impressions? Pure magic. I dump my stuff and make a beeline for the kitchen – compact but kitted out like a telly chef's dream, with a Belfast sink overlooking the garden. Brew a proper cuppa (none of your teabag-dunking nonsense; I even found loose-leaf in the cupboard, bless the last guests). Sipping it on the terrace, feet up on a weathered bench, I watch the river do its thing: ripples catching the late sun, dippers bobbing about like feathered clockwork toys. It's so close I could practically fish from the lounge – not that I'm daft enough to try after the lamb incident. There's a cheeky hot tub bubbling away in the corner of the garden, half-hidden by rhododendrons, and I make a mental note for later, though right now I'm just soaking in the peace. No traffic hum, no neighbourly bin-rattling; just birdsong and the odd distant sheep bleat.

Wandering the rooms, it's all character – beamed ceilings low enough to duck if you're over six foot (note to self: mind the noggin), a telly bigger than my flat's, and that wood-burner screaming "cosy night in." The bedroom's a treat: king-sized bed piled with Welsh wool blankets, views straight onto the water. I flop down for a sec and think, "This is it, innit? The spot where city stress evaporates." Earlier chaos fades; that lamb was just the universe's way of making the arrival sweeter. Reflecting there, pint of local Brains in hand from the Bangor offy, I realise I've been chasing this simplicity – no plans, just river rhythms and a hideout that feels like a mate's secret bolthole. Three days ahead, but this first hit? Already legendary. If you're after Snowdonia without the coach-party crowds, Riverside Hideout's your ticket – mishaps and all.
