About Snowdonia
I finally made it to Monaco Ht (Pet) after a bit of a faff on the drive from Bangor, where I managed to take a wrong turn down a narrow lane that dead-ended at a sheep farmer's gate. Picture me, reversing with white-knuckled hands while a flock of woolly critics bleated their disapproval – classic me, turning a 20-minute journey into an unintended sheep-spotting tour. But hey, it was a laugh, and soon enough I was pulling up to this cosy pet-friendly cottage tucked away in the Snowdonia hills near Bangor, ready for three days of proper Welsh walking adventures.

First impressions? Blimey, what a stunner. The place is like a hug from the mountains – stone-built with a pitched roof, flower baskets dangling cheerily by the door, and those massive windows framing views of rugged peaks that make you forget the world. I let the dog out for a sniff-around on the little garden patch, and she was in heaven, nose-deep in the damp grass. Inside, it's all warm wood beams, a cracking Aga in the kitchen humming away, and a lounge with a wood-burner begging to be lit. I dumped my bags, brewed a cuppa, and stepped straight out for my first hike, buzzing with that holiday high.

Day one dawned misty but promising, so I laced up my boots for a gentle yomp up to the nearby woods – think classic Snowdonia trails, all twisty paths carpeted in moss and ferns, with the Menai Strait peeking through now and then. The air was crisp, laced with that earthy petrichor scent, and I was striding along feeling like a proper adventurer. But oh, the British weather – it has a way of keeping you on your toes. By noon, the sky turned from grey to proper black, and the heavens opened. I legged it back to Monaco Ht just as the rain hammered down like it had a personal grudge. Laughing at my sodden state, I lit the fire, toasted some crumpets, and watched the deluge from the comfort of the sofa. The cottage felt even more inviting then, all snug and dry while the world outside turned into a waterfall.

Undeterred, I was out again the next morning when the clouds parted like they'd had a telling-off. This time, I tackled a steeper path up towards the lower slopes of the Carneddau foothills – nothing too mad, just enough to get the heart pumping and calves burning. The views were mint: heather-clad hills rolling out, buzzards wheeling overhead, and that fresh post-rain sparkle on everything. Doggo bounded ahead, splashing through puddles, while I paused for snaps and a bit of quiet reflection. Standing there, wind tousling my hair, I thought about how these spontaneous weather whims force you to slow down. Back home, I'd be glued to screens; here, a sudden squall meant impromptu cottage time, pondering life's little detours – much like that sheep-gate fiasco.

Come afternoon, the forecast lied again – blue skies flipped to drizzle mid-stride on a coastal-edge ramble near the strait. We dashed back, me giggling at my drenched fleece, straight into the cottage's embrace. That evening, curled up with a book and the dog's head on my lap, listening to the patter on the roof, it hit me: this is the magic of Snowdonia stays. Monaco Ht isn't just a base; it's your weather-proof bunker amid the drama. By day three, another hike loomed, but those first impressions – the mishaps, the moody skies shaping epic walks, the cosy retreats – had me hooked. If you're after hikes that dance with the elements, this pet-friendly gem is pure gold. Can't wait to go back.
