About Snowdonia
I finally made it to Cadair Cabin 146 after a bit of a faff on the winding roads into Blaenau Ffestiniog. We'd set off from home early, the kids buzzing in the back seat with their crisps and iPads, me navigating via a dodgy signal on Google Maps, and Sarah at the wheel of our trusty old Volvo. Snowdonia's slate-strewn hills loomed larger with every twisty mile, the air getting crisper as we climbed towards this tucked-away gem in Gwynedd. But typical me, I'd forgotten to fill up the petrol tank properly, and about five miles out, the low fuel light started blinking like a strobe at a village disco. "Brilliant," I muttered, pulling into a layby near a sheep-dotted field. We nursed it to the nearest garage in Llan Ffestiniog, laughing as the pump attendant quipped, "You lot look like you've been dragged through a hedge backwards." A ten-minute detour, but hey, it gave us our first taste of that chaotic lodge life charm – nothing goes perfectly on a family break, does it?

Pulling up to Cadair Cabin 146 around teatime felt like stumbling into a hug from an old mate. Nestled in a quiet spot just outside Blaenau Ffestiniog, it's one of those cosy wooden cabins that screams "get away from it all" without being pretentious. The gravel crunched under our tyres as we parked, and there it was: a smart little lodge with a pitched roof, flower tubs spilling over with hardy Welsh geraniums, and a proper wood-burner chimney poking skywards. No sprawling mansion, just the right size for our lot – me, Sarah, our two under-tens, and the dog, who was already sniffing out adventures. The key was in a lockbox (bless modern holidays), and as I fumbled it open, a pair of robins eyed us suspiciously from the bird table. First impressions? Pure bliss. The door swung open to reveal a surprisingly roomy open-plan living space, all warm pine and tartan throws. Kitchen on one side with a Belfast sink and that new-fangled induction hob I'd been coveting, lounge with squashy sofas begging for Netflix binges, and a dining table already set for four. Up a few steps, two snug bedrooms – one with a double and en-suite loo, the other bunked for the kids. Simple, spotless, and screaming family vibes.

We dumped the bags and cracked open the welcome pack: local teabags, shortbread, and a bottle of Welsh cider. "Right, who's for a brew?" I declared, playing the hero while Sarah unpacked snacks. The kids bolted straight out the back door to the private patio, whooping at the view – rolling hills patched with bracken, not a soul in sight, just the distant hum of the Ffestiniog railway. It's mad how close you are to Blaenau's slate mines yet feel miles from anywhere. I joined them, mug in hand, and we fired up the BBQ (gas, thank goodness – no faffing with charcoal in the drizzle). Burgers sizzling, the dog chasing his tail, and a light mist rolling in from the valley. Pure lodge magic. That first evening, as the sun dipped behind Llyn y Garn lake – visible on a clear day from the cabin's vantage – we played Uno by lantern light when the power flickered (classic rural Wales). Laughter echoed off the beams as I lost spectacularly, the kids crowing, "Dad's rubbish!"

Sitting there later, pint of cider warming my hands, I had a quiet moment of reflection. Life's been a whirlwind – work deadlines, school runs, the daily grind. But here, in this unassuming cabin, everything slowed. No emails pinging, just the crackle of logs and family chatter. It's the simple stuff that hits home: the way the cabin wraps you in cosiness against the mountain chill, the shared mishaps turning into stories. We hadn't even ventured to the Llechwedd Slate Caverns or the nearby trails yet – that was for tomorrow – but already, Cadair 146 had us hooked. First impressions don't get much better; it's the perfect spot for a relaxed Snowdonia escape, slate-country chaos and all. Can't wait for day two.
