About Snowdonia
I finally made it to Aberdyfi after a bit of a faff on the A493 – nothing major, just me taking a wrong turn at a roundabout and ending up in a layby with a sheep giving me the side-eye. Typical me, innit? We'd packed the car to the gunnels with kids' wellies, a cool bag of picnic bits, and enough board games to survive a nuclear winter. The drive from the east was stunning, though – those rolling hills giving way to the Mawddach Estuary, all misty and dramatic under a proper Welsh sky. By the time we trundled into Aberdyfi village, I was buzzing for our three-day escape at the 2 Bed Lodge, this cosy log cabin tucked just a stone's throw from the action.

Pulling up to the lodge felt like stumbling into a hug from an old mate. It's one of those proper little hideaways, wooden cladding glowing in the late afternoon sun, with a cheeky hot tub bubbling away on the deck like it was waiting just for us. We piled out, kids immediately whooping and racing to explore the garden – it's compact but perfect, with a barbecue area and those views over the estuary that make you go, "Blimey, we've got it made." Unlocking the door, the first waft was pure cabin magic: woodsmoke from the stove we'd light later, and that fresh linen smell. Inside, it's all compact charm – two snug bedrooms upstairs, one with a double and the other twins for the little ones. We dumped our bags and claimed spots; mine by the window overlooking the water, because who wouldn't?

First impressions? Bloody brilliant. The open-plan living space is the heart of it – kitchen done out in Shaker style, all cream cabinets and granite tops, stocked with everything you'd need for a lazy fry-up or a post-walk pasta. The sofa looked comfier than my one at home, and with the woodburner all set with logs, I could already picture us toasting marshmallows that evening. The kids, bless 'em, made a beeline for the games cupboard – Jenga, Uno, the lot – and within minutes, there was chaos as towers toppled and cards flew. I joined in, of course, but let's just say my competitive streak led to a toppled tower and a fit of giggles when it all came crashing down on my lap. "Dad's rubbish at this!" they chorused. Cheeky monkeys.

We didn't waste time settling in. A quick unpack, then out for a potter down to Aberdyfi's beach, just a five-minute stroll away. The tide was out, revealing all those pebbly bits the kids love hurling into the waves. We skimmed stones – mine were rubbish, naturally – and breathed in that salty air, with the Cambrian Railway puffing along in the distance like something from a storybook. Back at the lodge, sunset was turning the estuary gold, so we fired up the barbie. Sausages sizzling, buns toasting on the grid – simple pleasures, but honestly, after a mad week back home, it felt like luxury. The hot tub called next; we piled in, steam rising, kids splashing like loons while I sank back with a beer, watching the hills fade to purple.

That first evening, as we huddled round the woodburner with hot chocolates (spiked with whisky for the grown-ups), I had a proper moment. Sat there amid the lodge's warm glow, listening to the kids' chatter and the gentle lap of the estuary outside, I thought, "This is it, isn't it? No schedules, no screens pinging – just us, this brilliant little spot, and the kind of peace you can't buy." It's funny how a wrong turn and some lodge life chaos can lead to that. Aberdyfi's got that pull – close enough for a village shop run for milk and biccies, but worlds away from the daily grind. Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings, but right now, first impressions sealed it: we're hooked on this 2 Bed Lodge life.
