About Snowdonia
Stepping inside was like hugging an old mate – compact but spot-on for one, with a wood-burner begging for logs, a kitchenette stocked for brekkie feasts, and that massive bed dominating the space like it knew I'd be knackered from hikes. First impressions? Bliss. The views from the lounge window straight onto the hills around Bala Lake were chef's kiss – mist clinging to the fells, herons dipping into the water. I dumped my bags, brewed a cuppa, and eyed the OS map I'd brought. Plan A: a sturdy 5-mile loop up to Llyn Arenig Fach, that gem just a short drive away, for sunset views over the reservoir. Weather app said "partly cloudy" – liar. By the time I'd laced up my boots and driven the few miles to the trailhead, the sky had turned biblical. Proper Welsh weather, flipping from blue skies to horizontal rain in a heartbeat. I laughed it off at first, pulling on my waterproofs and setting off along the muddy path, the wind whipping my hood like it had a personal grudge. The hike started promising – heather underfoot, the lake shimmering below, and not a soul around. Bala's edges feel wild yet accessible, perfect for this solo potter. But half a mile in, the heavens opened properly, turning the trail into a stream. Sod it, I thought, grinning through the downpour – this is why we pack gaiters. I adapted sharpish, ducking into a sheepfold for shelter and munching a soggy flapjack while the squall raged. Light humour in the misery: me, a grown man, having a staring contest with a soggy lamb who looked as fed up as I felt. British weather's the great leveller, eh? Once it eased to a cheeky mizzle, I pressed on, shorter route now – a cheeky 2-miler scrambling up to a viewpoint overlooking the lake's glassy expanse. The clouds parted just enough for a rainbow arcing over the water, rewarding my stubbornness. Sloshed back to the car feeling alive, mud-caked boots and all. Evening in the lodge was pure joy after that drenching. I stoked the fire, toes thawing over a bowl of cawl I'd rustled up from local bits (Bala's shops are gold for that). Gazing out as dusk fell, the hills softened in the gloaming, and I had a proper moment – you know, that gentle self-reflection where you realise these weather-whipped walks are what recharge the soul. No Instagram perfection, just raw Snowdonia grit. Plans for day two? Another Bala-local ramble, maybe around the lake's edge or up to Rhos-y-gilfaethog, weather permitting. Fingers crossed it doesn't pull the same trick. First day's verdict: 1 Bed Lodge is a cracker for walkers – central for those short, punchy Snowdonia trails without the faff of big mountains. The weather tried to scupper it, but that's the thrill, right? Can't wait for tomorrow's soggy shenanigans. |
