About Saundersfoot
I finally rolled into Saundersfoot after a bit of a faff on the M4, where my sat-nav decided to play silly buggers and rerouted me through every bloody village in Carmarthenshire. Picture this: me, the wife, and our two lads crammed in the Fiesta, arguing over whether to stop for Greggs or push on, when suddenly we're crawling behind a tractor doing 20mph. Classic family road trip chaos – I nearly lost my rag, but then we spotted the sea glinting in the distance, and tempers cooled faster than a cuppa left on the dashboard.

Pulling up to Swn Y Mor Lodge just as the sun dipped low over the bay, I felt that proper holiday buzz kick in. Tucked away in a quiet spot overlooking Saundersfoot's sandy beach, this little wooden lodge is the epitome of cosy Welsh escape. From the outside, it's like something out of a storybook – all cedar cladding and pitched roof, with a cheeky hot tub bubbling away on the deck like it's inviting us for a dip right there and then. We tumbled out of the car, bags flying everywhere, and the lads immediately legged it to peer over the fence at the waves crashing below. "Dad, can we swim now?" they yelled, while I wrestled with the key safe, cursing under my breath because I'd fat-fingered the code twice.

Stepping inside, the first impression hit like a warm hug. The open-plan living area is compact but spot-on for lodge life – squishy sofas in neutral tones, a telly begging for footie reruns, and a kitchenette kitted out with everything you'd need for beans on toast or a full fry-up. I love how it's got that Scandi vibe without trying too hard: underfloor heating (bliss after the drive), quirky nautical prints on the walls, and a wood-burning stove stacked with logs, just waiting for an evening chill. The smell of fresh linen wafted from the bedrooms – two doubles and a bunk room for the boys, all snug with those plush duvets that make you want to dive straight in. Our room had a massive window framing the sea view; I stood there for a mo, mesmerised by the tide rolling in, thinking how daft it is that we city folk forget to slow down like this.

First order of business: unpack and crack open the welcome pack. Proper thoughtful touch – local shortbread, Pembrokeshire gin, and a bottle of Welsh cider. We poured fizzies (well, elderflower pressé for the kids) and piled onto the deck as the sun set in a blaze of pink over the beach. Saundersfoot unfolded below us like a postcard: families strolling the promenade, dogs chasing waves, and the faint hum of laughter from the Wiseman's Bridge direction, just a hop away. No big plans, just that simple joy of arriving somewhere that feels instantly like home.

Of course, lodge life isn't without its giggles. The boys discovered the hot tub and demanded an immediate splash, but in the excitement, little Ollie slipped on the wet decking and ended up arse-over-tit into a flowerpot. No harm done, just a muddy bum and us in stitches – the perfect icebreaker for our three days of beach bumming. As we settled in that night, munching fish and chips from the local takeaway (proper crispy batter, none of your soggy rubbish), I had a quiet moment gazing out at the dark sea. Work stresses? Forgotten. Kids squabbling? Part of the fun. Sometimes, you don't need grand adventures; just a cracking little lodge, a sea view, and family daftness to remind you life's best bits are the simple ones. Can't wait to wake up to that sunrise tomorrow.
