About Saundersfoot
I finally made it to Saundersfoot after a bit of a faff on the drive down from Carmarthen—nothing major, just me spilling half my flask of tea all over the passenger seat five minutes from the turning, turning the car into a soggy sauna before I'd even checked in. But hey, that's holidays for you, innit? Pulling up to Sonnet 3 Spa (Pet) on that quiet lane just off the main drag, I was already grinning. This pet-friendly cottage looked like a proper Welsh gem: stone-built, cosy as a hobbit hole, with a private hot tub bubbling away in the garden like it was waiting to hug me hello.

First impressions? Spot on. The owner, a chap called Dai with a beard like a Brillo pad and a handshake that could crush walnuts, met me at the gate. "Welcome to paradise, bach!" he boomed, eyes twinkling under his flat cap. Bach? I hadn't heard that since school trips to the Valleys. He showed me round the place—open-plan living with a kitchen that screamed "cook fry-ups here," beams overhead that probably dated back to smugglers, and that spa setup out back with the hot tub, sauna, and a shower that could blast barnacles off a boat. My dog, Rufus, went mental sniffing everything, tail wagging like a metronome on speed. Dai chuckled, "He'll love it here—plenty of rabbits to chase on the cliffs." Already, the vibe was pure relaxation, five minutes' stroll from the sandy beach.

But it was the locals who turned arrival into a proper character parade. No sooner had I unpacked than Mrs. Evans from next door popped over with a Tupperware of Welsh cakes, still warm. "For the new lad and his hound," she said, her accent thick as clotted cream. She's lived here 50 years, apparently, and launched into tales of Saundersfoot's smuggling heyday. "My grandad hid brandy in the caves down by the harbour—Customs men never found a drop!" Rufus hoovered up a crumb she'd dropped, and she laughed till she wheezed. "Cheeky bugger! Just like my late cat, Taffy." We chatted over tea on her doorstep, her waving at passers-by like the queen of the village. "That's Geraint the postie—delivers rain or shine, even when the tide's in."

Wandering down to the beach that first afternoon, I bumped into Tommy, the ice cream man with a van older than my mum. "First time, eh?" he clocked my pasty London pallor. Scoop of rum and raisin in hand (99p, bargain), he regaled me with how Saundersfoot's harbour used to bustle with fishing boats, now mostly pleasure craft dodging seals. "Saw a pod yesterday, right by the lifeboat station—lazy sods, sunning themselves!" His laugh was infectious, and he slipped Rufus a free cone lick, winking, "Don't tell the seagulls." Quirky doesn't cover it; these folk are Saundersfoot's secret sauce.

By evening, sinking into the hot tub with a cold Stella, steam rising like dragon breath, I reflected gently on why I'd needed this. Back home, life's a treadmill—work, worries, rinse repeat. Here, chatting with Dai about his glory days skippering fishing trips, or Mrs. Evans sharing recipes scribbled on fag packets, it hit me: real connections, the daft, heartfelt kind, recharge the soul better than any spa gadget. A minor mishap with tea stains faded fast amid their warmth. As the sun dipped over Caldey Island, just visible from the garden, I thought, this three-day jaunt's already magic. Can't wait for tomorrow's cast of characters.
