About Saundersfoot
I finally made it to Shepherds Hut The Hurdle in Saundersfoot after a drive that was mostly scenic but not without its comedy of errors. Picture this: I'm trundling along the A478 from Tenby, windows down, radio blaring some classic Oasis, when I realise I've left my phone charger at home. No biggie, I think, until my sat-nav decides to throw a wobbly right at the crucial junction into the village. Suddenly, I'm looping around Saundersfoot's narrow lanes like a lost puppy, past the harbour where fishing boats bob gently and families amble with ice creams. A quick stop at the local shop for a replacement charger (and a sneaky pasty) sorts it, and 20 minutes later, I'm pulling up to the hut, grinning at my own daftness.

First impressions? Blimey, what a gem. Tucked away in a quiet spot just a short stroll from the beach, this shepherd's hut is proper cosy – think wooden beams, a snug double bed piled high with quilts, and a little kitchenette that's got everything you need without any faff. The owners had left fresh milk, bread, and a cheeky bottle of local Welsh cider in the fridge, which felt like the warmest welcome. I dumped my bag, kicked off my trainers, and just... breathed. After months of rushing about at work, arriving here hit me like a big, fluffy reset button.

The garden sealed the deal. It's a proper suntrap, enclosed with wildflowers buzzing with bees and a couple of comfy loungers overlooking a paddock where sheep graze lazily. I flopped into one with a cuppa, watching the clouds scoot by, and thought, "This is it – the joy of bugger all." No itinerary, no alarms, just the sound of waves crashing faintly from the nearby beach. That first afternoon, I cracked open a dog-eared copy of a Bill Bryson book I'd been meaning to read for ages, losing myself in tales of daft travels while the sun dipped low. Every now and then, I'd wander out to pluck a few herbs from the patch – mint for my tea, rosemary for later – feeling like I'd stumbled into my own little Eden.

As evening rolled in, I fancied a gentle potter down to Saundersfoot's beach, all of five minutes away. The sand was golden, the sea a shimmering blue, and not a soul in sight bar a few dog-walkers. I paddled at the water's edge, letting the chilly waves nibble my toes, then ambled back as the sun set in a blaze of pink over Caldey Island. Back at the hut, I rustled up a simple supper – cheese on toast with that cider – eaten outside under fairy lights strung across the garden. It was perfection in its simplicity, no restaurants or crowds needed.

That first night, lying in bed with the wood-burner crackling softly (it was a touch nippy), I had a proper moment of reflection. Life's mad rush had me knackered, always chasing the next thing. Here, in this tiny hut, doing sweet nothing felt revolutionary. No emails pinging, no deadlines looming – just the rhythm of the sea and the stars peeking through the skylight. I slept like a log, waking to birdsong and the promise of two more days of this bliss.

Day two kicked off the same way: brekkie in the garden, more reading, maybe a siesta. I nipped to the village for papers and a sausage roll from the bakery, chatting with locals about the weather (as you do). Afternoons blurred into lazy explorations – a slow loop around the cliffs, spotting seals, or just hammocking with a podcast. The hut's veranda became my throne, perfect for people-watching the occasional passer-by. Humour crept in when I tried "cooking" on the tiny hob and ended up with slightly charred spuds – lesson learned: keep it simple, mate.

By day three, I'd mastered the art of lingering. Breakfast stretched into brunch, a book into lunch, and a beach doze into tea. Saundersfoot's gentle vibe – the arcade lights twinkling at dusk, the chippy's aroma wafting over – wrapped around me like a cosy blanket. Leaving felt wrong, but that first impression lingers: Shepherds Hut The Hurdle isn't just a stay; it's a permission slip to slow right down and savour the small stuff. If you're after proper downtime, book it – you won't regret it.
