About Saundersfoot
I’ll never forget the drive to Shepherds Hut The Crook in Saundersfoot – a proper Welsh adventure that started with me taking a wrong turn just outside Tenby and ending up in a narrow lane that screamed “tractor only”. Picture this: me, the wife, and our two lads (ages 8 and 10) crammed in the car, sat-nav chirping like a demented sheepdog, while I’m swearing under my breath at a flock of actual sheep blocking the way. “Dad, are we lost?” pipes up little Jack from the back. “No, mate, just embracing the scenic route,” I fibbed, as we reversed into a hedge. Classic family holiday chaos, but 20 minutes later, we were there, pulling up to this quirky gem nestled in the crook of a peaceful field, just a stone’s throw from Saundersfoot’s sandy shores.

First impressions? Blimey, it was love at first sight. The hut itself is this cosy wooden pod, all curved roof and fairy lights twinkling in the late afternoon sun, like something out of a storybook. No sprawling mansion, mind – it’s compact and clever, perfect for our three-day jaunt. We tumbled out of the car, bags flying everywhere, and the boys were off like rockets, whooping at the sight of the private hot tub bubbling away under a pergola. “Can we jump in now, Dad?” begged Tom. “Not till we’ve unpacked, you monkeys!” I laughed, but honestly, who could blame them? After that drive, I was half-tempted myself.

Stepping inside felt like shrinking into a warm hug. The space is tiny but ticks every box: a double bed tucked up in the loft (reached by a ladder that had me channeling my inner ninja), a snug sofa area with a telly for rainy days (fingers crossed), and a kitchenette gleaming with all the essentials – kettle, toaster, even a proper oven for my legendary beans on toast. The loo and shower are en-suite, surprisingly roomy for a hut, with underfloor heating that made my toes sing. It’s glamping done right, folks – rustic charm without the roughing it. We cracked open a bottle of local Pembrokeshire cider (grabbed from a farm shop en route), and as the sun dipped towards the sea, we sprawled on the outdoor decking, feet up on the table, munching crisps and watching the world go by.

That first evening set the tone for our relaxed family break. We wandered the short path to Saundersfoot beach – all golden sands and gentle waves lapping at the shore, families flying kites and dogs chasing sticks. The boys built a lopsided sandcastle while I skimmed stones, feeling properly unplugged. No emails, no deadlines, just the simple pleasure of salt in the air and laughter echoing off the cliffs. Back at the hut, we fired up the BBQ (gas, thank goodness – no faffing with charcoal), grilling sausages and burgers as the hot tub steamed invitingly. Chaos ensued when Jack slipped on a wet patch trying to “test” the temperature fully clothed. “You plank!” I chuckled, hauling him out, sopping and giggling. Sorted him with a towel and a hot chocolate, then we all piled in, stars popping overhead like someone had flicked a celestial light switch.

As I lay there that night, bubbles fizzing around us, I had a quiet moment of reflection. Life’s mad rush back home – school runs, work stress – it all felt miles away. Here in this little hut, with the family splashing and the sea whispering in the distance, I realised these are the bits that matter: the mishaps, the mess, the pure, unfiltered joy. Shepherds Hut The Crook isn’t just a stay; it’s a reset button. First impressions nailed it – we were already plotting our return before we’d even unpacked the toothbrushes. If you fancy a slice of Saundersfoot magic without the hassle, this is your spot. Cosy, chaotic, and utterly brilliant.
