About Saundersfoot
I finally made it to Ramsey Lodge at Bier Wood Lodges in Saundersfoot after what felt like the scenic route from hell – or at least from the M4. We'd packed the car with enough crisps, wellies, and kid paraphernalia to survive a Welsh winter, but about five miles out, I took a wrong turn onto some narrow lane that had more cows than tarmac. Cue the husband yelling "Satnav said left!" while I insisted it was right, and our youngest spilling Ribena all over the boot. Classic us – turning a two-hour drive into a three-hour farce. But as we crested the hill and spotted the lodges nestled in those lush Pembrokeshire woods, all was forgiven. Saundersfoot welcomed us with that soft evening light, and honestly, it was worth every sticky mile.

Pulling up to Ramsey Lodge, I was chuffed to bits. It's one of those proper cosy wooden cabins, the sort that screams "get away from it all" without being pretentious. Hot tub bubbling away on the private deck, fairy lights twinkling already (cheers to the last guests for leaving them on), and a view straight out to the wooded valley that dips down towards the sea. We unloaded in a flurry – kids racing about like feral puppies, me tripping over the welcome hamper basket on the porch. Inside, it was pure lodge bliss: open-plan living with a wood-burning stove begging for a fire, squishy sofas in muted greens and greys, and a kitchen that had every gadget going, from a Nespresso pod machine (lifesaver) to a slow cooker for tomorrow's stew. The bedrooms? Spot on for a family of four – ours had a super-kingsize bed that swallowed us whole, and the kids' room with bunks that had them giggling before we'd even unpacked.

First impressions? It felt like stepping into a hug. We cracked open the hamper – local fudge, Welsh cakes, a bottle of something cheeky – and while the other half wrestled with the log burner (smoke alarm test number one: failed spectacularly), I poured us GandTs and we slumped on the deck as the sun dipped. The air was that crisp, briny Saundersfoot mix, with distant waves crashing from the beach just down the hill. No traffic hum, just birds and the hot tub's gentle gurgle. Chaos erupted when the kids discovered the board games stash – Monopoly Deal turned into a full-on sibling showdown, complete with accusations of "cheating, Mummy!" I refereed with a grin, loving the lodge life madness that makes holidays real.

Wandering down to Saundersfoot beach the next morning – it's a five-minute stroll through the woods – sealed it. Golden sands stretching out, donkey rides plodding along, and families building epic sandcastles. We grabbed pasties from one of the beach cafés, proper buttery ones with chunks of meat that melted in the mouth, and let the tide nibble our toes. Back at the lodge by lunch, it was hot tub time: kids splashing like mini whirlpools, me sinking in with a book, pretending I wasn't watching them like a hawk. That afternoon, a gentle ramble along the coastal path to Coppet Hill gave us puffin-spotting dreams (none showed, but the views over the bay were magic), and we returned to fire up the BBQ on the deck. Sausages sizzling, laughter echoing – pure, unfiltered family joy.

Sitting there that first evening, steam rising from the tub as stars popped out, I had a quiet moment. Life back home's a whirlwind of school runs and deadlines, but here in Ramsey Lodge, it all slowed. That Ribena spill? A blip. The wrong turn? Led us here. It's the simple stuff – woodsmoke scent, kid chaos, sea whispers – that recharges you. If you're after a relaxed Saundersfoot escape, this is it. Three days in, and I was already plotting our return.
