About Saundersfoot
I’ll never forget the drive to Saundersfoot that crisp October afternoon – the kind of autumn day where the Pembrokeshire air bites just enough to make you grateful for your thermals. We’d set off from Tenby, only a few miles up the coast, but I managed to cock it up spectacularly by taking a wrong turn onto a narrow lane that dead-ended at a muddy farm gate. “Brilliant, Dave,” I muttered to myself, reversing with the finesse of a JCB digger while my other half stifled giggles. Fifteen minutes later, we were back on track, windows down to catch that briny sea scent mixed with fallen leaves, and pulling up to Osprey 6 just as the sun dipped low, painting the sky in fiery oranges.

Saundersfoot in early autumn is pure magic, isn’t it? No summer crowds clogging the pavements, just that mellow hush where the waves whisper rather than roar. Osprey 6 sits right in the heart of it all, a cosy two-bedroom cottage tucked into a row of whitewashed gems overlooking the bay. From the moment we parked on the steep little street – tyres crunching over the first scatter of copper beech leaves – I knew we’d lucked out. The owners had left the key in a sneaky lockbox, and as I fumbled it open with numb fingers (why didn’t I wear gloves?), the door swung wide to reveal a haven that screamed “kick back and forget the world.”

Stepping inside, the first impression hit like a warm hug after a chilly hike. The open-plan living area was bathed in that soft, slanting October light filtering through the big sash windows – views straight out to the harbour where fishing boats bobbed gently on a glassy sea. The woodburner was already stacked with logs, begging to be lit, and I could practically taste the comfort of an evening in with a mug of tea. “This is us for three days,” I grinned at Sarah, dumping our bags by the squishy leather sofa. The kitchenette was compact but brilliant – granite worktops gleaming, a retro toaster that looked like it’d seen a few Welsh breakfasts, and a fridge humming quietly with local milk and butter left as a welcome touch. I love how these Snaptrip cottages nail that homely vibe; no sterile hotel nonsense here.

We didn’t waste time unpacking properly. Instead, we layered up against the brisk sea breeze – autumn in Saundersfoot means jumpers by day, thermals by night – and wandered straight out to the beach, all of 30 seconds away. The tide was out, exposing vast expanses of golden sand littered with seaweed and the odd crab shell, the cliffs glowing russet in the fading light. Kids from nearby cottages were building epic driftwood forts, their laughter echoing off the harbour walls, while dog walkers chucked balls into the surf. No basking in the sun here; this was bracing, soul-stirring stuff, the kind that turns your cheeks pink and clears your head. We crunched along the prom, past the iconic lifeboat station, grabbing chips from the harbourside kiosk – crispy, vinegar-sharp, and steaming against the chill. Sat on a bench as dusk fell, watching the lights flicker on in the bay, I felt a proper pang of reflection. Life back home’s been a whirlwind of deadlines and doom-scrolling; out here, with the autumn equinox vibes settling in, it’s like the season’s whispering, “Slow down, mate. Breathe.”

Back at Osprey 6, we cracked open a bottle of red and got that fire roaring. The cottage wrapped around us like a favourite woolly – beams overhead creaking softly, the sea’s rhythmic hush lulling us through the double glazing. First impressions? Spot on. In October’s gentle grip, Saundersfoot isn’t about peak-season frenzy; it’s intimate, restorative, the leaves turning and the crowds thinning to let you truly soak it in. If you’re after a three-day reset, this is your spot – just don’t take my wrong turn.
