About Saundersfoot
Pulling up to the lodge that first afternoon felt like stumbling on a secret hideaway. Tucked just on the edge of Saundersfoot, with those rolling views over the hills that give it the name, it's the sort of place you'd miss if you blinked. No grand entrance, just a cosy wooden porch and a cheeky robin eyeing me up as I unloaded my bags. Inside, it was all exposed beams, a cracking little kitchen with a Rayburn that promised roasts later, and a lounge with windows framing the sea in the distance. First impressions? Pure bliss. I cracked open a cuppa, sprawled on the sofa, and thought, "This is it—three days of no plans, just pottering." But you know me, I can't sit still. Eager to explore, I headed out for a wander, aiming vaguely for the beach but taking a wrong turn down a tucked-away path behind the lodge. Bloody brilliant mistake. It led me to this hidden cove I'd never heard of—nothing on the maps, just a scrambly descent through brambly gorse to a sliver of sand called something like Smuggler's Slot (or was it? Names escape me when I'm lost). Empty as a pin, save for a few seals barking offshore. I sat there with my flask, waves lapping at fossil-strewn rocks, feeling like I'd nicked a private bit of Wales. Who needs the main drag when you've got this? That evening, hunger drove another accidental gem. Instead of the obvious pubs on Saundersfoot's High Street, I veered off down a lane marked "private road—proceed at own risk." Chuckling at my own daftness, it spat me out at a blink-and-miss-it shack selling fresh crab straight off the boats. The old boy there, windswept as the cliffs, cracked one open for me on the spot, slathered in mayo on thick bread. "Best kept secret," he winked. Back at the lodge, I devoured it on the patio, the sun dipping behind the hills, pint in hand. Proper magic. Next morning, same story—got "lost" again chasing a glimpse of a fox I'd spotted from the bedroom window. Ended up on a winding coastal path that hugged the cliffs above Coppet Hill, far from the donkey rides and ice cream queues. Wildflowers everywhere, butterflies flitting about, and a bench overlooking a bay where the water's that impossible turquoise. I paused there, boots muddy, breathing it all in. Gentle moment, that: staring out, I reflected on how life's rush back home blinds you to these pockets of peace. Why chase the crowds when getting turned around leads to the real treasures? By day three's lunch, another fluke find—a overgrown track from the lodge straight to a pebbly beach inlet, perfect for skimmin' stones. No tourists, just me, the gulls, and that seagull revenge fresh in my mind. Mountain View Lodge wasn't just a base; it was the launchpad for these off-piste joys. If you're after Saundersfoot's soul, ditch the guidebook, embrace the wrong turn. You'll thank me later. |
