About Saundersfoot
By the time I trundled up the quiet lane to Milk Wood 2, I was half an hour late for check-in and feeling like I'd wrestled a gale. The cottage peeked out from behind a hedge, all cosy stone and slate roof, tucked away in that perfect spot where you can hear the waves but not the tourist hustle. I parked on the gravel drive – narrow, mind, but it fit – and there was the owner, Anne, waving from the doorway with a mug of tea in hand. "Don't worry about the time, love," she says with that warm Pembrokeshire lilt. "Gulls got you, did they? Happens to the best of us." She handed over the keys, gave me the rundown on the Wi-Fi code (spotty, as it should be on holiday), and left me to it. Bliss. Stepping inside was like sinking into a hug. The living room's got this big squishy sofa facing a wood burner – not lit yet, but I could already imagine cosying up with a cuppa later. Beams overhead, quirky nautical prints on the walls, and a telly that promised rubbish TV for rainy days. Kitchen was a dream: proper farmhouse table, shiny Aga humming away, and a fridge stocked with local milk and butter as a welcome touch. I cracked open a bottle of Welsh cider from the offy on the way (Tremlett's, sharp and perfect) and wandered through to the bedrooms. Mine upstairs had a super-king bed piled with fluffy pillows, views straight out to the bay, and an en-suite that didn't skimp on hot water pressure. The other rooms? Same vibe – crisp linens, little touches like seashell ornaments. No frills, just right. First impressions? Proper wow. I dumped my bags and legged it down to the beach, a five-minute stroll through winding paths lined with marram grass. Saundersfoot's strand stretched out golden and empty that afternoon, tide out, rock pools glittering. Kids were paddling near the lifeboat station, dogs chasing waves, and the air smelled of salt and chips from the pier café. I grabbed a 99 from the ice cream van – vanilla heaven in a cone – and plonked on the sand, poo-stained windscreen forgotten. Sun dipping low, painting the cliffs rusty orange. Back at the cottage, I fired up the barbecue on the private patio (sheltered, with fairy lights strung up – genius), sizzling sausages from the village butcher. Neighbours waved over the fence, proper friendly without being nosy. That first evening, supping my cider as dusk fell, I had one of those quiet moments. You know, staring out at the lighthouse twinkling on Caldey Island, thinking how daft it is to let life's little squawks – work stress, that endless inbox – rob you of this. Milk Wood 2 isn't some fancy pile; it's homey, real, the sort of place that resets your soul without trying. Saundersfoot wrapped around it like a mate's arm over your shoulder. Can't wait to explore more tomorrow, but right now? This chaotic arrival was the best mishap ever. |
