About Saundersfoot
I finally made it to Hazel Nook in Saundersfoot after what felt like the daftest drive down from Narberth. Picture this: I'm trundling along those narrow Pembrokeshire lanes in my little hatchback, sat-nav chirping away like it's got a vendetta, when—bam!—I take a wrong turn onto a single-track road that's basically a sheep's personal catwalk. There I am, wedged between a drystone wall and a bloke in a Land Rover towing a trailer full of kayaks, both of us gesturing wildly like we're in a silent comedy sketch. "Sorry, mate!" I mouth through the window, reversing like a pro (read: sweating profusely) until he waves me past with a grin. Classic me—overpacking the car with crisps, wellies, and enough tea bags to sink a ship, only to cock up the last five minutes.

By the time I pulled up outside Hazel Nook, just a stone's throw from Saundersfoot's sandy beach, I was knackered but buzzing. It's one of those proper Welsh cottages, you know? Tucked into a quiet nook off the main drag, with a cheeky garden that screams "relax here with a GandT". I fumbled the key code on the lockbox—third time lucky, naturally—and pushed open the door to this cosy haven. First impression? Pure magic. The living room hit me like a warm hug: low-beamed ceiling, a wood-burning stove begging for a fire (even if it was a balmy July evening), and squishy sofas piled with cushions that whispered "flop down now". I dumped my bags and just stood there, inhaling that faint scent of sea salt mixed with fresh linen. Saundersfoot's right on your doorstep here—no car needed—and I could already hear the gentle crash of waves from the bay.

Wandering through, I clocked the kitchen straight away—compact but kitted out like a dream for lazy self-catering. A proper Aga-style cooker, granite worktops, and a fridge that hummed contentedly, stocked with milk and butter from the hosts (bless 'em). I cracked open a bottle of local Pembrokeshire cider I'd grabbed en route—crisp, appley perfection—and rustled up a cheese toastie while gazing out the window at the garden. It's not massive, but oh, the views! Wisps of sea peeking over the hedges, gulls wheeling about, and that golden light hitting the flowerbeds just so. I chuckled to myself, thinking how I'd nearly missed this gem thanks to my navigational fail. Sat on the patio bench with my feet up, munching away, I felt the arrival chaos melt away like ice cream on a hot day.

Upstairs, the bedrooms sealed the deal. Our double was snug as a bug, with a super-kingsize bed that looked like it could swallow you whole—crisp white sheets, fluffy pillows, the works. The en-suite was spotless, power shower roaring like it meant business, and a window framing the rooftops towards the beach. The twin room next door had that same quaint charm, perfect for kids or mates, with views over the garden. I flopped onto the bed for a minute, staring at the exposed beams, and had one of those gentle "what am I doing with my life?" moments. Back home, it's all rush and emails; here, in this little Saundersfoot bolthole, time slows right down. Why do I wait so long between holidays? Silly sod.

Stepping out for that first evening stroll was the cherry on top. Five minutes and you're on Saundersfoot beach—miles of soft sand, rock pools twinkling at low tide, families paddling in the shallows. The sun dipped low, painting the sea pink, and I grabbed fish and chips from a takeaway on the front (proper batter, not that greasy rubbish). Eating them on a bench, watching the tide roll in, with Hazel Nook waiting back home... yeah, first impressions don't get much better. That mishap on the lane? Best thing that happened—made the arrival feel earned. Can't wait to wake up to it all tomorrow.
