About Saundersfoot
I finally made it to Hafan Lodge 85 in Saundersfoot after what felt like the scenic route from hell – or at least from the M4, via a detour caused by my daft sat-nav glitch. Picture this: me, the wife, and our two lads (ages 8 and 10) crammed into the car with enough snacks to feed a rugby team, belting out old Oasis tunes to keep the peace. We'd planned a smooth three-hour drive from Bristol, but no, my phone decided to reroute us through every narrow Pembrokeshire back lane imaginable. We ended up behind a tractor for 20 minutes, the kids chanting "Mooove over!" like it was a football chant. Classic family holiday start – minor chaos, maximum giggles.

Pulling into the Hafan site just as the sun dipped low over the coast, I felt that proper buzz of arrival. Saundersfoot's one of those Welsh gems where the sea air hits you like a tonic, and there it was, Lodge 85 tucked neatly among the others, all cosy timber cladding and that welcoming porch light flickering on. We'd booked it for a chilled three-day break, nothing fancy, just us lot unwinding in this pocket of Pembrokeshire paradise. The site's right on the edge of the village, a stone's throw from the beach – you can practically smell the salt and chips from the doorstep.

First impressions? Spot on. We tumbled out of the car, bags everywhere, and the lads were off like rockets, racing to explore the wooden decking that wraps around the lodge. It's got that perfect family setup: two bedrooms (one for us, one for the boys with bunks they immediately claimed as their fort), a compact but brilliant open-plan living area with a kitchen that had everything from a full-size oven to a dishwasher – lifesaver after a day of kid-wrangling. The sofa looked comfier than our one at home, and that wood-burning stove? We didn't light it on night one (too summery), but I could already picture toasting marshmallows if the Welsh weather turned moody.

We cracked on with unpacking amid the usual lodge-life pandemonium – the youngest knocking over a bag of crisps, crisps exploding like confetti across the laminate floor. "Dad, it's a crisp apocalypse!" he yelled, diving in to 'help' clean up. I laughed so hard I nearly tripped over the hoover. Simple pleasures, innit? That moment right there, faffing about in our temporary home, felt like the holiday magic kicking in. No schedules, no rush – just us sorting socks and sandwiches while the sun set pink over the bay.

Stepping outside for our first proper gander, the views blew us away. Saundersfoot Beach stretches out below, that wide arc of golden sand fringed by cliffs, with the gentle lap of waves you could hear from the lodge patio. It's dog-friendly too, which was ace for our scruffy labrador, who was already sniffing every blade of grass like he'd discovered Narnia. We wandered down the short path to the shore – five minutes tops – paddling in the chilly Irish Sea, the boys skimming stones and me failing spectacularly at it. "Yours went backwards, Dad!" the eldest cackled. Humiliating, but brilliant.

Dinner was chips from the local takeaway down the road, eaten on the deck as gulls wheeled overhead. The village hums with that easy seaside vibe – families strolling the promenade, the odd busker strumming away. Back inside, we sprawled on the sofa with a board game, the kids' laughter bouncing off the walls. Lying there later, listening to the sea whisper, I had one of those quiet reflective moments. Life's mad rush back home? Forgotten already. This wee lodge, with its wonky door charm and sea-salted air, reminded me why we do these breaks: not for Instagram perfection, but for these messy, joyful first-night vibes that recharge the soul. Can't wait for day two.
