I finally made it to Saundersfoot after a bit of a faff on the drive down from Carmarthen. It's one of those pet-friendly cottages, all cosy stone walls and sea glimpses, right where you can wander to the beach in flip-flops. First impressions? Blown away. The owners had left a welcome pack with local treats: a slab of Welsh cheddar, fresh bread from the village bakery, and a bottle of Pembrokeshire ale. I cracked that open straight away, toes already itching for the hot tub, but hunger hit first. Jet-lagged from the drive (okay, two hours max), I needed scran.

Strolled straight out to The Mermaid, that cracking pub just a stone's throw from the cottage door. Saundersfoot's got this proper fishing village charm, and The Mermaid nails it—beamed ceilings, salty sea views, and a menu that's all about fresh, local grub. I went for the Saundersfoot fish and chips: plump cod in crispy batter, chips thick as my thumb, mushy peas on the side, and a dollop of tartare sauce that could've been homemade. Washed it down with a pint of Felinfoel Double Dragon—smooth, malty, perfect. Sat there by the window, watching families amble along the harbour, feeling that first holiday glow. "This," I thought, "is why we do these getaways."

Back at Epic Spa, the kitchen called next. That welcome cheddar was begging to be turned into a rarebit, so I rummaged for the grill. Attempt one: disaster. I slathered too much mustard, and it came out looking like a melted welly. Chuckled to myself, scraping it into the bin—gentle reminder that I'm no Gordon Ramsay. Switched to plan B: raided the nearby Saundersfoot Country Market the next morning (it's just down the lane, open weekends with all the local produce). Grabbed rashers of dry-cured bacon from a Pembrokeshire farm, eggs still warm from the hen, and some plump tomatoes. Fried it all up in the cottage's cracking little Aga-style cooker—proper full English, grease and glory. Ate it on the patio, hot tub bubbling away, steam rising like I was in my own private sauna. Bloody marvellous.

Lunch was a cheeky pasty from Greggs—nah, scratch that, the real deal from the harbour bakery, stuffed with steak and ale from local butchers. Flaky pastry, gravy oozing just right. Washed it down with a takeaway coffee from the indie spot by the co-op, then back for an afternoon in the spa room. That sauna had me sweating out the drive stress, followed by a dip in the tub with a cheeky cider from the fridge (stocked it myself from the offy). Dinner? Pub crawl numero two at The Glen, Saundersfoot's hidden gem further along the front. Ploughman's with mature cheddar, pickled onions, and crusty bread—simple, hearty, washed down with Brains SA. Chatted with locals about the best crab spots (saving that for tomorrow).

Reflecting now, chin deep in that steaming tub as the sun dipped over the bay, I realised these first impressions weren't just about the epic eats—though lordy, the food here's unreal, all fresh and unpretentious. It's the simple joy of faffing in a cracking kitchen, pub-hopping without a care, and letting Saundersfoot's grubby charm fill you up. Three days in, and I'm already plotting a return. What's not to love?
