About Saundersfoot
I finally made it to that cosy 1 Bed Lodge in Redberth after a bit of a faff on the road from Tenby. I'd nipped over for a quick three-day jaunt in Saundersfoot, craving that proper Welsh seaside vibe, but wouldn't you know it, about five minutes from the turn-off, I managed to splatter my windscreen with a rogue seagull's revenge – right in the middle of a downpour. Laughing at my own daft luck, I pulled over near the beach car park, squinting through the mess like a pirate with a foggy spyglass. That's when I met Dai, the first quirky character of my trip.

Dai was this weathered bloke in a battered flat cap, fiddling with his fishing rod by the Saundersfoot Harbour wall. "Alright there, lad? Looks like you've been dive-bombed by King Gull himself!" he chuckled, his Pembrokeshire accent thick as clotted cream. I explained my plight, and before I knew it, he was wiping my screen with an oily rag from his tackle box, regaling me with tales of the local gulls. "They've got names, see? That one's Captain Beaky – terror of the chip shop queue." We got chatting about the best spots for crab fishing off the rocks, and he insisted on showing me his secret bait recipe involving Marmite and old socks. Proper eccentric, but dead welcoming. By the time I drove off, wiping tears of laughter, my first impression of the area was sealed: full of characters who'd adopt you on sight.

Rocking up to the lodge just a short hop inland from Saundersfoot beach, I was knackered but buzzing. The place is a proper gem – a snug one-bed hideaway tucked in Redberth's quiet fields, with that classic Welsh charm of low beams and a wood-burner begging for a fire. First impressions? Blissful peace after the harbour hustle. I dumped my bags and stepped out for a wander, only to bump into Mrs Evans, the neighbour two doors down, hanging her washing on a line that stretched like a tightrope across her garden.

"Ey up! You the new face in the lodge?" she called, peering over her specs, a fag dangling from her lips. Turned out she's lived here 50 years, knows every blade of grass. We ended up nattering over her fence for half an hour about the local wildlife – badgers that raid her bins like burglars in stripey pyjamas, and the fox she calls "Ginger Ninja" who's got a limp from a scrap with a tractor. "Don't leave food out, mind, or he'll have your flip-flops for breakfast!" Her stories had me in stitches, especially the one about the time the village cat, Mr Whiskers, gatecrashed the pub quiz dressed in a tea cosy. Mrs Evans pressed a Tupperware of bara brith upon me – "Fresh baked, none of your shop rubbish" – and waved me off with a wink. Charming doesn't cover it; these folks are gold.

That evening, as the sun dipped over the fields, I cracked open a tin of sardines on the lodge patio and reflected on how I'd almost bottled the trip after a grim week at work. Staring out at the twinkling lights of Saundersfoot in the distance, I thought, blimey, sometimes you just need a seagull mishap and a gaggle of mad locals to remind you life's too short for spreadsheets. Next morning, popping down to the beach for a brew, I clocked Tommy the ice cream man, parked up with his van blasting "Agadoo" at full volume. "Fancy a 99, mate? On the house if you guess how many rock pools I've fallen in this year!" We bantered about his legendary wipeouts – eight so far, he claimed, with photographic evidence on his phone. Tommy's the sort who'd turn a rainy day into a comedy hour, full of tall tales about mermaids in Coppet Hall bay and the time he raced a pensioner on mobility scooters.

By the end of day one, my first impressions of the 1 Bed Lodge weren't just about the comfy bed or the sea views – they were all about these larger-than-life locals who turned a simple stay into a proper laugh riot. Saundersfoot's got that magic, and Redberth's quirky crew made it unforgettable from the off. Can't wait to go back for more.
