About Saundersfoot
Spotting the lodge at last, tucked away in that peaceful nook just outside Narberth, I felt the tension melt away faster than my pasty. It's one of those proper Welsh cottages—cosy, unpretentious, with a stone facade that screams "welcome home" even if you've only just arrived. I parked up on the gravel drive, grabbed my weekend bag (overpacked as usual with too many jumpers for a mild Welsh spring), and fumbled with the key code under the porch light. The door swung open to a waft of fresh linen and that faint, comforting scent of wood polish. First impressions? Absolute bliss. The open-plan living space hit me like a warm hug: a compact kitchenette gleaming with all the essentials—kettle on the go for a proper cuppa, toaster for crumpets, and a fridge stocked with local milk that tasted like it came straight from a nearby farm. I dumped my stuff on the plush sofa and proper took it in. That one bedroom? A little haven with a king-sized bed piled high with fluffy pillows and a quilt that looked like it could swallow you whole. I flopped onto it for a test bounce—firm but dreamy, perfect for crashing after a day on the beach. The en-suite was spotless too, with a powerful shower that roared to life on the first try, steam fogging up the mirror as I rinsed off the travel grime. Outside, the private patio caught the late afternoon sun, overlooking a tidy garden buzzing with birdsong. I cracked open a cold cider from the off-licence I'd spotted en route and just sat there, feet up, watching the world go by. No traffic noise, no neighbours nattering—just the distant crash of waves from Saundersfoot beach, less than a mile away. Wandering down to the beach that first evening was the perfect chaser to my arrival farce. Saundersfoot's sandy stretch is a stunner, all golden curves framed by rugged cliffs, with families paddling in rock pools and dogs chasing frisbees. I strolled the promenade, picking up a bag of chips from one of the chip shops—proper salty, vinegary ones that hit the spot—while the sun dipped low, painting the sea in pinks and oranges. Back at the lodge, I rustled up a simple pasta with some Welsh cheddar I'd nabbed from the village shop, eaten at the little dining table with a view of the garden. It was all so effortlessly relaxing, a world away from my usual city chaos. Reflecting on that slightly shambolic start as I sipped my nightcap, I couldn't help but chuckle. Here I was, twigs in my hair from my hedge mishap, yet utterly content in this gem of a spot. Saundersfoot and the 1 Bed Lodge had me hooked from minute one—proof that a bit of arrival pandemonium often leads to the best unwinding. Can't wait to return, minus the shortcut next time. |
