About Pembrokeshire
I finally made it to Swn Y Mor Lodge in Pembrokeshire after what felt like the world's most faffing-about drive from Tenby. We'd set off full of beans, me, the missus, and our two lads, aged eight and ten, buzzing about beaches and pasties. But no, about five minutes from the place, I took a wrong turn down some narrow lane that screamed "no through road" – classic me. Ended up reversing into a hedge with the caravan mirror pinging off a branch. "Dad's a numpty," the youngest piped up from the back, and we all cracked up. Scraped the paint a bit, but hey, adds character, right? That's lodge life for you – a bit of chaos before the calm.

Pulling up to Swn Y Mor, I was chuffed to bits. Tucked away in a peaceful spot just outside Tenby, it's this cosy wooden lodge that looks like it belongs in a fairy tale, all nestled among trees with the sea whispering in the distance. The owners had left the keys in a handy box, and as we tumbled inside, lugging bags and picnic coolers, it hit me: this was proper family heaven. No posh hotel fuss, just us lot claiming our little haven for three days of proper Welsh relaxation.

First impressions? Bloody brilliant. The open-plan living area is spot-on for kids – massive sofa that swallows you whole, telly for rainy days (fingers crossed), and a kitchen kitted out with everything from cafetière to toaster. I brewed a cuppa straight away, proper builder's tea, and we sprawled out, munching Welsh cakes we'd grabbed en route. The lads were straight on the wooden floors, building a den from cushions, while I clocked the French doors leading to that private deck. Mate, the view! Overlooking Caldey Island on a clear day, you can almost smell the salt and hear the waves crashing at Tenby beach, just a short stroll away. Sat there with my brew, feet up, and thought, "This is it – no emails, no deadlines, just us."

Wandering round the lodge, it's compact but clever. Two bedrooms done up lovely – ours with a kingsize bed that looked like a cloud, and the boys' with bunks they immediately scrambled over like monkeys. "This is better than home!" the eldest declared, which earned him a playful clip round the ear from his mum. The bathroom's a treat too – powerful shower that blasted away the drive's grime, and fluffy towels that make you feel like you're staying somewhere swanky without the price tag. Little touches everywhere: board games in a basket, a welcome pack with local biscuits and milk in the fridge. Proper thoughtful.

Stepping out for our first explore felt like unwrapping a gift. The lodges are in this serene park, paths winding through to Tenby Harbour, where we wandered down for chips and ice cream that evening. The boys chased seagulls, nearly losing a chip to one cheeky beggar, and we watched fishing boats bob about as the sun dipped low. Back at the lodge, firing up the BBQ on the deck – nothing fancy, just sausages and brollies – with that sea breeze ruffling the washing we'd hung out. Pure bliss. A bit of lodge chaos when the youngest knocked over the sauce bottle, splattering my trainers, but we laughed it off with wet wipes and more giggles.

Sitting there later, stars popping out over the bay, I had a quiet moment. Life's mad rush back home – work, school runs, the lot – it all melted away. Here, in this unassuming little lodge, it was just simple pleasures: family chatter, salty air, and no agenda. Pembrokeshire's magic snuck up on me, turning a three-day jaunt into something that'll stick. If you're after that relaxed family vibe with a splash of everyday mayhem, Swn Y Mor's your spot. Can't wait to go back.
