About Pembrokeshire
I finally made it to Shepherds Hut The Hurdle after a drive that was equal parts scenic and sodding infuriating. Picture this: I'd left Cardiff early, buzzing with that holiday excitement, windows down, radio blasting some cracking indie playlist. Pembrokeshire's coastline unfurled like a postcard – those rugged cliffs dipping into the sea, gorse bushes screaming yellow against the grey-blue waves. But no, about 20 minutes from Milford Haven, I managed to splatter my windscreen with a rogue seagull's revenge. Proper Hitchcock moment, feathers and all. I pulled over near the marina, muttering expletives while wiping it off with a service station napkin. Laughable now, but at the time, I was convinced the birds had it in for me. Still, it was nothing a quick stop at a chippy in Hakin couldn't fix – a battered sausage to steady the nerves.

Turning off the main road onto that narrow lane felt like slipping into another world. The satnav cheerfully announced I was "arriving now," and there it was: Shepherds Hut The Hurdle, tucked away in a peaceful spot just outside Milford Haven. No sprawling estate, mind – this is proper Pembrokeshire, all salty air and gentle hills rolling down to the Haven. I parked on the gravel, grabbed my weekend bag (deliberately light, no faffing about), and there she stood: this gorgeous little shepherd's hut, all wood and charm, with a veranda that begged for a chair and a brew.

First impressions? Blimey, it was cosier than my nan's front room. Stepping inside, the wood burner was already set (cheers to the hosts), and the compact space wrapped around you like a hug. A double bed piled high with quilts, a wee kitchenette with everything you'd need for lazy toast sessions, and that bathroom – compact but spotless, with a hot shower that steamed up the mirror in seconds. Outside, the garden was a riot of wildflowers and herbs, fenced just right to keep the local sheep from photobombing. I plonked my book on the table – some dog-eared thriller I'd been saving – cracked open a window, and let the sea breeze do its thing. No itinerary, no rush. This was the joy of doing bugger all, and I was here for it.

That first afternoon, I didn't venture far. Why would I? A potter around the garden revealed a hammock strung between apple trees, perfect for swinging with a cuppa. I brewed tea strong enough to strip paint, settled in with my feet up, and watched clouds scud over the hills towards St Ishmael's, all of a mile or so away. The hut's spot is magic for that – close enough to nip to the local shop for milk or pasties, but far enough to feel utterly removed. I read a solid 50 pages, dozing off when the sun dipped low, that golden light filtering through the leaves. Humour in the mundane: I tried "cooking" – aka heating a pasty on the hob – and nearly set off the smoke alarm. Heroically salvaged it, though. Ate it on the veranda, crumbs everywhere, listening to the distant call of gulls.

Evening brought a gentle stroll down the lane, no more than a few hundred yards to a viewpoint over the estuary. Milford Haven's waters twinkled as fishing boats chugged home, the air thick with ozone and contentment. Back at the hut, I lit the wood burner (pro tip: it roars to life like a dream), poured a cheeky gin from my flask, and sprawled on the sofa with more reading. No telly, no signals demanding attention – just the crackle of logs and my own thoughts.

Sitting there, mug in hand, I had one of those quiet moments. You know, the kind where you realise life's been a non-stop treadmill? Work emails, deadlines, the daily grind. Here, in this unassuming hut, I felt the weight lift. No grand adventures needed; the simple act of slowing down, of savouring the hush, was the real treat. By bedtime, tucked under those quilts with rain pattering on the tin roof, I was already plotting a return. Three days of this? Pure bliss. If you're after proper escapism without leaving Wales' best coast, Shepherds Hut The Hurdle is your spot. Do yourself a favour – go, unpack, and do sweet sod all.
