About Pembrokeshire
Pulling up to Rhosgranog felt like stumbling into a secret hideaway. Tucked on a working farm a stone’s throw from Haverfordwest, it’s this cosy shepherds hut perched amid rolling fields, with Pembrokeshire’s gentle hills stretching out like a green blanket. The owner, a cheery local farmer type, waved us in with a “Mind the chickens!” – and there they were, strutting about like they owned the place. We’d booked it for that proper off-grid vibe, and first impressions? Spot on. The hut’s compact but clever – a double bed up a ladder (the boys fought over who’d claim it first), a snug sofa area, and a kitchenette that screamed “simple suppers ahead”. Outside, a wood-fired hot tub bubbled invitingly, and a fire pit promised marshmallow-melting evenings. No Wi-Fi, no telly – just us, the birdsong, and the faint bleat of lambs. Heaven. Unpacking was a laugh. I’m lugging bags while the wife sorts the groceries – pasties from the Haverfordwest bakery, local cheddar, and a slab of bara brith we’d nabbed en route. The boys, meanwhile, discover the hut’s resident chaos: a rogue hen that’s wandered in through the slightly ajar door, pecking at our crisps. “It’s a farm pet!” shouts Tom, chasing it out with whoops of delight. We collapse into laughter on the veranda, sipping tea from mismatched mugs, watching the sunset paint the fields gold. That first hour? Pure magic. No schedules, no screens – just the simple pleasure of being somewhere that feels worlds away, yet dead handy for a quick shop in town. As dusk settled, we fired up the hot tub. The wood smoke mingled with the earthy farm smells, and the lads splashed about, pretending they were pirates in a Welsh hot spring. Me and the missus sank in with a couple of tins, toes touching under the bubbles. “This is what holidays should be,” she said, and I couldn’t agree more. There’s something gently reflective about it all – staring at those stars popping out over Pembrokeshire’s dark skies, I realised how knackered we’d been from the daily grind. Here, in this tiny hut, life slowed right down. No big plans, just family giggles and the joy of not knowing what feathered intruder might pop by next morning. First impressions sealed it: Rhosgranog’s got that rare knack of feeling like home, but better – chaotic in the best way, with simple pleasures at its heart. If you’re after a family break that’s all about unplugging and reconnecting, this is your spot. We were smitten from the off, and that was just day one. |
