About Pembrokeshire
I’ll never forget the drive down to Pembrokeshire for our three-day jaunt—me behind the wheel of our battered old Fiesta, sat-nav chirping away like an overexcited budgie, and my other half, Jen, munching on a bag of crisps that she swore were “low-cal”. We’d booked Ramsey Lodge at Bier Wood Lodges, just a stone’s throw from Tenby, craving that proper Welsh coast escape. But about 20 minutes from the turn-off, disaster struck: I misread a faded sign for “Narberth” (or was it “Narbeth”? Who knows), took a rogue left, and promptly got us wedged in a muddy farm track. The car’s tyres spun like a hamster on a wheel, and Jen’s crisp bag exploded everywhere. “Great start, Lewis,” she laughed, as a flock of sheep eyed us suspiciously. A local farmer in wellies towed us out with his tractor—classic Pembrokeshire welcome, muddy boots and all. We arrived at Ramsey Lodge an hour late, caked in clay, but grinning like idiots.

Pulling up to the lodge, I was chuffed to bits. Tucked away in a peaceful wooded spot amid the Bier Wood glades, it’s one of those hot tub lodges that screams “relax, you’ve earned it”. The wooden cladding blended right into the trees, with a private deck overlooking a babbling brook—proper idyllic. First impressions? Spot on. Inside, it was cosy as anything: plush sofas, a wood-burner begging for logs, and a kitchen kitted out better than ours at home. We dumped our bags, cracked open a couple of local Pembrokeshire ales from the fridge (cheers to that touch), and flopped onto the veranda. The air smelled of pine and sea salt, even though Tenby’s beaches were only a couple of miles off. No traffic hum, just birdsong and the rustle of leaves. Jen summed it up: “This is what holidays are for—zero faff.”

But the real magic kicked off when we decided to ditch the map and just wander. Ramsey Lodge’s location is a wanderer’s dream—surrounded by those lush Bier Wood trails that spit you out into hidden nooks you’d never find on TripAdvisor. First afternoon, we stumbled down a barely-there path from the lodge, chasing what looked like a deer track. Ten minutes in, we tripped over this secret cove: a tiny, pebbled beach hemmed in by jagged cliffs, waves lapping at seaweed-strewn rocks. No one else there—just us, a pair of seals bobbing offshore, and the kind of blue sea that makes you pinch yourself. We paddled about, skimmed stones (I’m rubbish at it, naturally), and picnicked on cheese sarnies. “How did we miss this?” Jen wondered. Pure accident, that’s how—getting lost in the best way.

Next morning, same vibe. We veered off the main wood path onto a sheep-nibbled track marked by nothing but a wonky stile. It led to an overgrown headland overlook, maybe a mile from the lodge, with views across Caldey Island that felt like our private postcard. Wind whipping our hair, gulls screeching overhead—we spotted a pod of dolphins arcing through the waves below. Bloody hell, talk about hidden gems. I felt a proper moment of reflection there, sat on a boulder with a thermos of tea: life’s too short for sticking to the tourist trail. Work stress, bills, the daily grind—it all melted away. Why rush when serendipity hands you this?

By day two’s end, we’d unearthed another accidental find: a tucked-away freshwater pool in the woods, fed by a trickling stream, perfect for a chilly dip. Laughing like loons as we splashed about, I realised Ramsey Lodge isn’t just a base—it’s a launchpad for these off-the-beaten-path joys. No crowds, no Instagram hordes, just the thrill of the unknown. If you’re after first impressions that stick, book it. We left muddy but buzzing, already plotting the next “lost” adventure. Pembrokeshire’s secrets are waiting—if you dare veer off the path.
