About Pembrokeshire
I finally made it to Lodge 11 in Newport, Pembrokeshire, after a drive that was equal parts scenic and sodding infuriating. We'd set off from Cardiff early, the kids buzzing in the back with their crisps and iPads, me at the wheel promising Mum we'd beat the traffic. Fat chance. About halfway, just past Fishguard, I took a wrong turn onto some narrow B-road – classic me, following the sat-nav like a lamb to slaughter. Ended up in a muddy farm track with sheep eyeing us suspiciously, the car groaning as I reversed out. "Daddy's lost again!" piped up little Ollie from his booster seat, and we all had a right laugh about it. Twenty minutes later, we were back on track, windows down, inhaling that salty sea air that screams Wales.

Pulling up to Lodge 11 around teatime felt like stumbling into a hug from an old mate. Tucked in a quiet spot just off the beaten path in Newport, it's one of those cosy little lodges that looks like it belongs in a storybook – stone-built with a pitched roof, flower tubs spilling over with geraniums, and a wooden bench out front begging for a cuppa. The owners had left the keys in a lockbox, a welcome note, and fresh milk in the fridge. No faffing about with check-in queues; just us, our bags, and that instant "ahh" feeling of holiday mode switching on.

First impressions? Proper lush. Stepping inside, it's compact but clever – open-plan living with a squishy sofa facing a wood burner (we didn't light it yet, but I could already picture rainy evenings to come), a kitchenette stocked with everything from cafetière to toaster, and two bedrooms down a short hall. Ours had a double with views peeking over the hedge to fields rolling towards the coast, and the kids' room had bunks that had them whooping like they'd won the lottery. "This is better than home!" declared six-year-old Mia, diving onto the bottom bunk with her stuffed unicorn. The bathroom's tiny but spotless, with fluffy towels and a rainfall shower that made me forgive the earlier sat-nav fiasco instantly.

We dumped the bags and headed straight out for a mooch around Newport – it's only a ten-minute wander to the heart of the village. Popped into the local shop for pasties and local cider (non-alcoholic for the driver in me), chatting with the chap behind the counter who reckoned the weather was holding just for us. The vibe here's dead relaxed; no crowds, just dog-walkers and families ambling about. We found a grassy spot by the River Nevern, let the kids chuck stones while we munched, watching the water gurgle past. Simple pleasures, innit? That first evening, as the sun dipped low painting everything golden, I felt a proper pang of reflection. Back home, life's a whirlwind of school runs and deadlines – here, time stretches out like toffee. Made me realise how rare it is to just *be*, without the clock ticking.

Back at the lodge, chaos ensued in the best way. Tried cooking spag bol on the hob, but the smoke alarm went off like a banshee when I overdid the garlic – Ollie thought it was fireworks, Mia hid under the table giggling. We ate outside on the picnic bench anyway, stars popping out overhead, the faint crash of waves from nearby Newport Sands carrying on the breeze. It's that lodge life magic: a bit of disarray, heaps of laughter, and zero pretence. Tucked the kids in early, their faces smeared with sauce, and collapsed on the sofa with a brew, feet up. First day's been a belter – can't wait to wake up to whatever Pembrokeshire magic tomorrow brings, but honestly, this little lodge has already won us over.
