About Pembrokeshire
I’ll never forget the drive to Hornbeam Lodge 5 in Pembrokeshire – a proper British road trip mishap right from the off. We’d set out from Narberth early, sat-nav chirping away, only for me to take a wrong turn onto some narrow lane that had more potholes than a council estate car park. Splash! A massive puddle soaked the windscreen, and my other half yelled, “You’ve turned us into a car wash advert!” Laughing it off, we arrived at the lodge just as the sun peeked through, about ten minutes late but buzzing with excitement for our three-day getaway.

Pulling up to Hornbeam Lodge 5, I was chuffed to bits. Tucked in a peaceful spot near Narberth, it’s one of those proper Welsh cottages – cosy, with a thatched vibe and flower baskets nodding in the breeze. First impressions? Spot on. The wooden porch creaked welcomingly underfoot, and stepping inside, it was all warm wood beams, a cracking Aga in the kitchen, and those big windows framing the rolling Pembrokeshire hills. We dumped our bags, brewed a cuppa, and within minutes, we were lacing up our boots for a hike. The weather was playing nice – bright blue skies, perfect for exploring the local paths.

Day one kicked off with a gentle stroll along the lanes towards the nearby woodlands. Pembrokeshire’s got these brilliant walks right on your doorstep here, nothing too strenuous, just enough to work up an appetite for a pasty later. We wandered past drystone walls dotted with sheep, the air thick with gorse and wild garlic. “This is the life,” I said, snapping pics on my phone. But oh, the British weather – it’s got a wicked sense of humour. Halfway round, the clouds rolled in like uninvited guests, and suddenly we were dodging fat raindrops. Giggling like kids, we ducked under a massive oak, sharing a soggy biscuit from my rucksack. It forced us to improvise: instead of pushing on to the next viewpoint, we looped back to the lodge, arriving drenched but exhilarated.

That first afternoon, cosy in Hornbeam Lodge 5’s lounge with the fire crackling (it lights in seconds, bless it), I had a proper moment of reflection. Sat there, mug in hand, watching the rain lash the windows, I thought about how we’re always chasing perfect plans. Here I was, miles from the daily grind, and the weather had flipped our script – yet it felt brilliant. No itinerary, just us adapting to whatever Pembrokeshire threw at us. It’s a reminder that the best bits of a holiday aren’t the grand hikes, but those spontaneous, soggy laughs.

Come evening, the rain eased, so we ventured out again – a short jaunt to a local meadow path, the ground squelching under wellies. The light was that magical golden hour stuff, turning the wet grass sparkly. We spotted a buzzard wheeling overhead, and for a bit, it was pure bliss. Back at the lodge, peeling off damp layers in the utility room (handy boot rack and all), we rustled up fish and chips from Narberth – delivery heaven. First impressions of Hornbeam Lodge 5? It’s a hiker's dream base: central for those weather-whipped walks, with drying space galore and views that make you forget the downpours.

By bedtime, knackered from our impromptu adventures, I reckon that mishap drive was a blessing. It set the tone for a holiday all about the walks, the whims of Welsh weather, and sinking into this cracking little lodge. Can’t wait to return – next time, I’ll pack extra biscuits for the rain.
