About Pembrokeshire
I’ll never forget the drive to Hornbeam Lodge 4 in Pembrokeshire – a proper Welsh autumn adventure that started with a classic me blunder. It was mid-October, you see, and those golden leaves were swirling like confetti along the A40 from Carmarthen, but I’d forgotten to check the tyres before setting off. Halfway near Narberth, with the hedgerows bursting in fiery reds and oranges, the nearside rear gave a cheeky wobble. Flat as a pancake! Pulled over in a layby, rain spitting down in that typical Welsh drizzle, I faffed about with the spare while swearing under my breath. Took half an hour, but hey, it gave me time to admire the misty valleys – nature’s way of saying “slow down, mate, you’re on holiday.”

By the time I trundled up the lane to Hornbeam Lodge 4, just outside Narberth, the afternoon light was fading into that soft, hazy glow you only get in autumn here. The lodge is one of those cosy wooden hides in a woodland glade, part of a scattering of holiday lets that feel worlds away from the daily grind, yet only minutes from the high street. Pulled up on the gravel drive, crunching under the wheels, and there it was: a smart, low-slung cabin with a veranda overlooking a sea of turning bracken and oaks heavy with acorns. The season had turned the whole place into a living painting – ferns glowing copper, the air crisp with that earthy scent of damp leaves and woodsmoke from a neighbour’s chimney.

Stepping inside for the first impressions, I was hit by pure hygge bliss, amplified by the autumn chill outside. The open-plan living area welcomed me with a wood-burning stove already set with kindling (cheers, Snaptrip cleaners!), plush sofas in muted greens, and big windows framing the woodland. Flicked the switch on the kettle – posh pod machine, none of your dodgy filter nonsense – and brewed a cuppa while unpacking. The kitchen was a dream for two: granite tops, a proper oven for roasting chestnuts later (autumn foraging vibes), and a larder stocked with tea towels embroidered with Pembrokeshire puffins. Up the wooden stairs, the king-size bed in the master was piled high with goose-down duvets, begging for an early night against the dropping temps. The en-suite shower was steaming hot, with fluffy towels that smelled of lavender – perfect after that roadside soaking.

First proper explore was the veranda at dusk, mug in hand, wrapped in the provided woolly throw. The woodland was alive with rustles – squirrels scampering, leaves pattering down like gentle rain. October’s shorter days meant that magical twilight hit early, turning the glade into a lantern-lit haven as I lit the outdoor fairy lights. Spotted a family of roe deer grazing at the edge, their coats blending with the bracken – a sight that wouldn’t happen in summer’s bustle. Laughed to myself thinking how I’d have been sweating buckets in July heat; instead, this cool bite sharpened every sense, making the lodge feel like a warm burrow.

Wandered down to Narberth’s high street, a five-minute drive, where the autumn fayre was in full swing. The weekly market was winding down, stalls heaving with local pumpkins, crab apples, and hot cider from Pembrokeshire orchards. Grabbed pasties from the bakery – steaming, flaky, stuffed with Welsh beef – and a slab of bara brith to scoff back at the lodge. The high street’s independent shops glowed under yellow lamps, cosy against the gathering dark, with zero tourist hordes. Back at Hornbeam, stoked the fire, flames dancing as rain tapped the roof. That first evening, cosy in joggers, I reflected gently: rushing through life like that flat tyre, but here in Pembrokeshire’s autumn embrace, everything slowed. The season stripped it back – no beach crowds, just raw beauty and quiet warmth. Three days stretched ahead, but this arrival? Pure magic. Couldn’t wait to wake to frosty mornings and more of it.
