About Pembrokeshire
I’ll never forget the drive to Hornbeam Lodge 3 in Pembrokeshire – a proper Welsh adventure that started with me taking a wrong turn near Narberth and ending up in a muddy farm lane, my little hatchback groaning like it was auditioning for a tractor role. “Bloody sat-nav,” I muttered, reversing into a hedge while a sheep eyed me suspiciously from the verge. Twenty minutes later, after a sheepish (pun intended) detour, I pulled up to the lodge, heart sinking at the thought of explaining the mud splats to the hosts. But honestly, that minor calamity was the perfect icebreaker for what turned out to be a three-day whirl of quirky locals who made my first impressions of the place utterly unforgettable.

The lodge itself? A cosy timber-clad gem tucked into blooming gardens just outside Narberth, with French doors spilling onto a private patio that screamed “relax here with a cuppa.” I’d barely unloaded my bags when Dai the owner rocked up in his battered Land Rover, all tweed cap and twinkling eyes. “You the London lad, then?” he grinned, clocking my number plate. “Don’t worry about the mud – had worse from the cows last week. Fancy a tour?” Dai’s the sort of chap who’s lived here all his life, knows every blade of grass in Pembrokeshire. Over a brew in the lodge’s snug kitchen – all exposed beams and a wood-burner that hadn’t even been lit yet – he regaled me with tales of the 1980s when Narberth’s market was the place to be. “Used to trade pigs right here,” he chuckled, pointing out the window. “Now it’s artisanal cheeses and folk like you escaping the rat race.” His dry wit had me in stitches; when I mentioned the sheep incident, he roared, “That’s old Ewe-nice you met – she’s the local traffic warden!”

First impressions ramped up that evening when I wandered into Narberth for a pint at The Woodland Inn, a proper locals’ boozer five minutes down the lane. There was Madge behind the bar, a silver-haired firecracker in her seventies who’d run the place since her husband “buggered off to Spain with a yoga instructor.” “What’ll it be, love? Pint of Brains or something posh?” she barked, already pulling a perfect head on a local ale. Madge’s stories flowed like the Tenby Ale – she’d once locked horns with a celebrity chef filming nearby, insisting his “fancy foams” couldn’t touch her shepherd’s pie. “Told him, ‘Stick to telly, boyo – this is Pembrokeshire grub!’” Her laugh was infectious, and soon I was chatting with her mate Geraint, a retired fisherman with hands like weathered oak and a beard that could hide a pasty. Geraint’s obsessed with Pembrokeshire’s coastal paths, even though he lives inland now. “Seen seals smarter than some tourists,” he winked, “but you seem alright. Mind the tides if you head to Amroth beach tomorrow – swallowed my cousin’s flip-flops once!”

The next morning, nursing a slight hangover from Madge’s “one for the road” policy, I met Mrs. Evans from the neighbouring cottage while fetching logs from the communal barn. She’s a widow in her eighties, sharp as a tack, with a cocker spaniel called Boris who thinks he owns the place. “New here, are you?” she quizzed, peering over her specs. “Don’t let Dai fill your head with nonsense – he still thinks he’s twenty-five.” Over shared slices of her bara brith (best I’ve ever tasted, sticky and spiced just right), she shared gems about Narberth’s hidden spots: the ancient oak in the castle grounds where lovers carve hearts, or the quirky sculpture trail in the woods nearby. “Life’s too short for fancy holidays,” she said softly, patting my hand. “This is where the real magic is – folk like us, nattering away.”

That gentle wisdom hit me as I sat on the lodge patio that afternoon, sipping tea and watching swallows dart over the hedges. Amid the laughter and local lore, I reflected on how easy it is to chase distant horizons when the best stories – and souls – are right here, in a Pembrokeshire lane. Hornbeam Lodge 3 didn’t just welcome me; its characters wrapped me in their warmth from the off. What a cracking start to the holiday.
