About Pembrokeshire
Still, the moment I step out and proper take in Hazel Nook, all that arrival chaos melts away. Tucked away in a peaceful spot on the edge of Narberth—literally minutes from the high street but feeling a million miles from anywhere—this place is pure Pembrokeshire magic. The cottage is one of those classic Welsh farm conversions: sturdy slate roof, whitewashed walls smothered in blooming honeysuckle, and a front garden bursting with wildflowers that scream "welcome, you daft traveller." I lug my bags up the two steps to the bright blue door, key in hand from the Snaptrip instructions, and push inside. Blimey, it's even better than the photos. The living room hits you first—cosy as anything, with a wood-burning stove begging for a fire (though it's not cold enough yet), squishy sofas in muted greens, and telly mounted above a basket of logs and kindling. Proper home-from-home vibes. Through to the kitchen, and I'm grinning like an idiot: granite worktops, a rayburn cooker that looks like it could feed a rugby team, and every gadget you could want, from cafetière to that fancy bread-maker I never use at home. I bung the kettle on straight away—milk in the fridge, Yorkshire Gold teabags lined up like soldiers—and while it boils, I poke my head into the garden. It's a sun trap, this south-facing patio, with a picnic bench under a pergola dripping with clematis, and views over open fields to the Preseli Hills hazy in the distance. No traffic noise, just birdsong and the faint bleat of lambs. Pembrokeshire does that to you, doesn't it? Turns a city lad like me into a countryside poet in seconds. Upstairs, the bedrooms are a dream. Our double has a superking bed piled high with crisp white linens and those fluffy Welsh blankets, plus an en-suite that's compact but spotless, with a rainfall shower that I test immediately (hot water on tap, no messing). The twin room's got views right over the garden, perfect for kids or a mate crashing. It's all so thoughtfully done—no clutter, just welcoming touches like fresh towels folded just so and a vase of daffs on the dresser. By now, the sun's peeking through the clouds, so I grab my cuppa and flop on the bench outside, breathing in that salty coastal air that's carried up from nearby beaches like Tenby, even though we're snug inland. That mirror mishap? Forgotten. Instead, I'm hit with this quiet moment of reflection: when was the last time I arrived somewhere and instantly felt... unhurried? Life back home's a whirlwind of deadlines and doom-scrolling, but here at Hazel Nook, it's like the world slows down. The cottage isn't flashy—it's better, it's real. A bolthole that whispers "stay a bit longer." First impressions? Knocked it out of the park. Can't wait to explore Narberth's indie shops and that cracking pub grub tomorrow, but for now, this is perfection. Three days of this? Sign me up forever. |
