About Pembrokeshire
I finally made it to Chalet Park Lodge in Newport, Pembrokeshire, after what felt like the most faffing-about journey of my life. Picture this: I'd set off from Cardiff bright and early, buzzing with excitement for a three-day getaway in this cosy coastal gem. The A40 was a dream at first – rolling green hills, a cheeky pasty from a services stop – but then, just past Fishguard, disaster struck in the form of a rogue seagull. Yes, you read that right. The blighter dive-bombed my windscreen mid-sandwich bite, splattering my pasty crumbs everywhere and leaving a Pollock-esque smear of guano that no amount of screenwash could shift. I pulled over near Nevern, laughing at myself in the rearview mirror, wiping mustard off my chin while swearing at the feathered felon. "Welcome to Wales," I muttered, as a drizzle started pattering down. Classic me – turning a simple two-hour drive into a comedy of errors.

By the time I trundled up the lane to Chalet Park Lodge, I was half an hour late, windswept, and starving. The sat-nav had a minor hissy fit in the last mile, insisting I was in the middle of the Irish Sea, so I ended up looping past the Parogama Centre once before spotting the turning. But oh, what a sight greeted me as I crunched over the gravel. Nestled in a peaceful wooded spot just a stone's throw from Newport's heart, this wooden chalet looked like it had been plucked straight from a fairy tale – all warm cedar cladding, pitched roof, and those big windows promising views of nothing but nature. I parked up, grabbed my bags (dropping one in a puddle, naturally), and fumbled the key safe code with rain-soaked fingers. Inside, the chaos of arrival melted away like butter on hot toast.

Stepping through the door was pure magic. The open-plan living space hit me first – a cracking wood-burning stove already set with kindling, squishy leather sofas begging for a collapse, and a kitchen that screamed "whip up a Welsh rarebit here." I could smell the faint pine from the wooden walls, and the underfloor heating? Bliss on chilled toes after that drenching outside. I dumped my stuff and beelied straight to the French doors, flinging them open to a private deck overlooking the garden. Birds were chirping, leaves rustling – it was like the world had exhaled. Newport's gentle hills stretched out, with just a glimpse of the coast winking in the distance. No traffic hum, no neighbourly nosiness; just tranquillity wrapped in a bow.

First impressions? Bloody brilliant. I cracked open a tin of local craft beer I'd picked up en route (Turf Hotel, if you're asking – their stuff's top-notch), and settled on the deck with a sigh. That seagull fiasco felt like a distant memory already. Wandering the chalet, I found two snug bedrooms upstairs, beds made up crisp as you like, and a bathroom with a power shower that could've powered a rocket. The attention to detail floored me – fresh towels, a welcome pack with Pembrokeshire biscuits and tea, even a guide to nearby walks. Speaking of which, I laced up my boots and ambled five minutes down to the River Nevern path, the air thick with sea salt and wild garlic. Newport's vibe is spot-on: proper village feel, with the Golden Lion pub just around the corner for a pint and a natter with locals about the tides.

As the sun dipped low, painting the sky in that moody Welsh pink, I lit the stove and rustled up fish and chips from the Newport Chippy – proper cod, not that frozen rubbish. Munching away, flames crackling, I had a proper moment of reflection. Life back home's been a whirlwind – deadlines, doom-scrolling, the lot. Here, in this unassuming chalet, everything slowed. That silly mishap on the road? It was the universe's way of saying, "Stop rushing, you daft sod. Breathe." Chalet Park Lodge isn't flashy; it's honest, comforting, like a hug from an old mate. If you're after a Pembrokeshire escape that hits reset without the hassle, this is it. Can't wait to return – minus the seagull, mind.
