About Pembrokeshire
I finally made it to Caldey Lodge at Bier Wood Lodges after what felt like the most faff-filled drive through Pembrokeshire's winding lanes. Picture this: I'd set off from Tenby early afternoon, buzzing with excitement for my three-day getaway, only for the sat-nav to chuck a right wobbly five miles out. It insisted on rerouting me down a single-track road that narrowed into a proper hedge-lined tunnel, and wouldn't you know it, I ended up face-to-fender with a tractor trundling along like it owned the place. The farmer gave me a cheery wave as if this was all part of the fun, but I was sat there sweating, reversing into a gateway with my little hatchback protesting every inch. "Welcome to Wales," I muttered, chuckling at my own daftness – me, the city lad who thinks a country lane is anything wider than a pavement.

By the time I pulled into the drive at Bier Wood Lodges, just a hop from Tenby, the sun was dipping low over the woods, painting everything in that golden Pembrokeshire glow. Caldey Lodge itself is a proper gem – a cosy wooden lodge tucked among the trees, with that inviting porch swing creaking gently in the breeze. I tumbled out of the car, arms full of bags, and fumbled the key code like a numpty on my first go. Third time lucky, the door swung open to reveal this absolute haven: open-plan living with a wood-burning stove begging for a fire, squishy sofas that screamed "flop down now," and a kitchen kitted out with everything from a Nespresso machine to proper china mugs. The smell of fresh linen hit me as I peeked into the bedroom – king-sized bed piled high with pillows, and those big windows framing the treetops. I dumped my stuff and just stood there, grinning like an idiot. After the tractor tango, this felt like pure luxury.

First impressions? Blimey, it was love at first sight. I cracked open a cold Peroni from the fridge (fully stocked welcome pack, cheers!), and wandered out to the private hot tub on the decking. It was bubbling away under the stars starting to pop out, with the distant whoosh of the sea from Caldey Island carrying on the wind – we're only a couple of miles from those sandy beaches, you see. The lodges are nestled in this peaceful wood, yet dead handy for a stroll to Tenby Harbour if you fancy fish and chips later. I dipped a toe in the hot tub water – perfect temp – and thought, "This is it, the unwind I've been craving." No signal drama either; the Wi-Fi was solid, but who needs screens when you've got this?

As I fired up the BBQ (gas one, dead easy), sizzling some local sausages I'd nabbed from Tenby's market earlier, I had one of those gentle moments of reflection. Life back home's been a non-stop whirl – deadlines, emails, the lot – and here I was, singed banger in hand, watching rabbits hop about in the undergrowth. That silly sat-nav mishap? It was the perfect reminder not to sweat the small stuff; sometimes the chaos leads you to the best spots. Slipping into the hot tub properly then, bubbles up to my chin, I toasted the evening with my beer. Caldey Lodge had me hooked from minute one – if you're after a Pembrokeshire escape that's equal parts rustic charm and proper comfort, this is your spot. Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings, but right now, this first night feels flawless.
