About Pembrokeshire
Pulling up to Caban Y Mor felt like stumbling into a postcard. It’s this cosy little seaside cabin, right on the edge of Narberth, with the sea breeze whispering through the garden and views that make you forget the tea disaster. We’d booked it for a quick three-day escape, and from the off, it was clear this place was magic. But honestly, it wasn’t the views or the wood-burner that made it – it was the characters we met straight away. Pembrokeshire locals have this knack for turning a hello into a yarn that sticks with you. First up was Dai, the keyholder who met us at the gate. He’s a wiry bloke in his seventies, with a flat cap that’s seen better days and a van plastered in fishing stickers. “You from England, then?” he grinned, handing over the keys while eyeing my soggy towel. I confessed to the tea spill, and he roared laughing. “Happens to the best of us, bach. Last lot from Birmingham reversed into my tractor – cost ’em a round at the pub!” Dai’s lived here all his life, fishing off Narberth’s coast since he was knee-high. He spent ten minutes regaling us with tales of the time a seal pinched his best catch right from the line, mimicking the flipper-slap with theatrical flair. “Cheeky buggers, they are. Smarter than half the tourists!” By the time he waved us off, we were in stitches, and I was already plotting a pint with him later. Inside, we dumped the bags and cracked open a window – that salty air hit like a tonic. But before we could unpack, there was a knock. Enter Mrs Evans, the neighbour from the farm next door, popping by with a jar of her homemade crab apple jelly. “Thought you might be peckish after the road,” she said, her accent thick as clotted cream. She’s a no-nonsense widow in wellies, with a gaggle of hens scratching about her feet. Over a cuppa in the garden (dry this time), she launched into the local lore. “Mind the cows on the lane at dusk – they’ve got right of way, see?” We chatted about Narberth’s market, just a short stroll away, where she sells eggs every Saturday. “Bargain hunters from Haverfordwest try it on, but I give ’em short shrift!” Her stories were gold: the ghost ship sightings off the coast, and how her late husband once won a pig at the flower show. I couldn’t stop grinning – it was like stepping into a Dylan Thomas play. That evening, as the sun set over the Pembrokeshire hills, we wandered to the nearby pub in Narberth for fish and chips. There, we bumped into Tommo, the barman with a beard like a bird’s nest and opinions on everything. “First time here? You’ll not want to leave,” he declared, pulling a pint of local Felinfoel. Over cod and mushy peas, he spun yarns about the area’s smugglers’ coves – hidden spots within spitting distance where contraband once washed up. “My grandad found a barrel of rum in ’52. Drank the village dry for a week!” His laugh was infectious, and soon we were swapping daft stories, me admitting my tea fiasco while he topped up our glasses on the house. Sitting back at Caban Y Mor that night, fairy lights twinkling and the sea murmuring, I had a quiet moment of reflection. In the rush of city life, I’d forgotten how these quirky chats ground you – no agendas, just proper human connection. Dai’s seal, Mrs Evans’ hens, Tommo’s rum: they turned our first day into something golden. Pembrokeshire, and this little cabin, hooked me proper. Can’t wait to go back. |
