About Pembrokeshire
I finally made it to Awel Y Mor Lodge in Pembrokeshire after what felt like the world's most unnecessary detour. Picture this: me, my partner Sarah, and our two cheeky kids, aged seven and nine, piling into the car in Cardiff at dawn, full of beans and crisps, aiming for a proper three-day Welsh coastal unwind. But no, halfway through the twisty A roads towards Tenby, I decide to "take a shortcut" via some dodgy sat-nav suggestion that led us straight into a sleepy village with roads narrower than my patience. We ended up doing a 17-point turn in front of a bemused farmer and his herd of cows—proper comedy gold, or so the kids reckoned as they howled with laughter. "Dad's lost again!" Cue eye-roll from Sarah. Classic family holiday start, innit?

By mid-morning, we rolled up to Awel Y Mor Lodge, tucked away in that lush bit of Pembrokeshire just outside Tenby. First impressions? Blimey, it was love at first sight. This isn't some flashy hotel—it's a cosy wooden lodge straight out of a storybook, all nestled in calm grounds with sea glimpses peeking through the trees. The kind of place that screams "relax, you've earned this." We parked up, grabbed our bags (after the kids raided them for more snacks), and stepped inside. The door creaked open to this warm, open-plan living space—soft sofas piled with cushions, a wood-burning stove begging for a lazy evening fire, and a kitchen that looked ready for impromptu pancake wars.

The kids bolted straight for the patio doors, flinging them open to the private deck. "Mum, look at the hot tub!" they shrieked. There it was, bubbling away invitingly, surrounded by loungers and that fresh sea air rolling in from the coast. You could practically taste the salt. Pembrokeshire does that to you—hits you with this effortless beauty. We dumped our stuff and let chaos reign for a bit: youngest upended a bag of toys across the wooden floors, eldest claimed the bunk beds upstairs like it was her personal kingdom. Sarah and I just grinned, cracking open a couple of local craft beers from the fridge (bless the welcome pack—milk, bread, and those beers were lifesavers).

First proper explore was the lodge itself. Compact but perfect for us lot—two bedrooms done up in seaside blues and whites, fluffy duvets that screamed nap time, and a bathroom with a rainfall shower that had me lingering longer than necessary. Downstairs, the dining table was massive, ideal for family board games or, let's be honest, arguing over who gets the last sausage later. I plonked myself on the sofa, feet up, gazing out at the gardens. It's funny how a place like this sneaks up on you. Amid the kids' whirlwind of "Can we go outside? Now? Pleeease?", I had this quiet moment—staring at the washing line flapping gently in the breeze, thinking about how we've been rushing through life lately. Work, school runs, the lot. Here, in this little Pembrokeshire haven, it all paused. Simple pleasures, eh? A cuppa in hand, waves crashing faintly in the distance. Made me reflect: maybe us parents need these spots more than the kids do.

Afternoon kicked off with lodge life proper. We fired up the hot tub—kids splashing like mad otters while Sarah and I sipped tea, watching them go feral. Bit of "chaos" when the youngest tipped in half a bottle of bubble bath ("It'll make more bubbles!"), turning it into a foam party. Laughed till our sides hurt. Then, a gentle wander down to the nearby coastal path—nothing strenuous, just that classic Pembrokeshire stroll with gulls overhead and rock pools to poke at. Back for a lazy barbecue on the deck as the sun dipped, filling the air with charcoal and chatter. No grand plans, just us, the lodge, and that golden light over Tenby Bay.

Awel Y Mor Lodge nailed those first impressions—cosy, chaotic in the best way, and pure family magic. Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings, but right now, this is spot on.
