I’d just about had it with the M4 crawl when we finally peeled off towards Narberth, the SatNav cheerfully ignoring my muttered curses after I’d taken a wrong turn at Carmarthen and ended up looping through some sleepy village with more sheep than signposts. It was a classic daft mishap—me, map-blind as ever, faffing about while my other half stifled giggles in the passenger seat. But hey, that’s the joy of a spontaneous three-day jaunt to Pembrokeshire, innit? We were bound for the 2 Bed Lodge, a cosy log cabin tucked just outside Narberth, and by the time we crunched up the gravel drive in the late afternoon sun, all was forgiven.

Pulling up to the lodge felt like stumbling into a hug from an old mate. It’s one of those proper Welsh hideaways—compact, woodsy, with a cheeky hot tub bubbling away out back like it knew we’d need unwinding after the drive. First impressions? Pint of Crafty Devil to start, sharp and citrusy, then we dove into platters of battered haddock—sourced from nearby Tenby boats, they reckoned—with chunky chips and mushy peas that transported me straight to childhood chippy runs. I went for the rarebit next, that bubbling cheese on toast with a kick of mustard, while she demolished a bowl of cockles in chilli garlic butter. “This beats my kitchen heroics,” I admitted over sticky toffee pud, both of us groaning happily. The barman’s banter about the best market stalls sealed it—felt like we’d been regulars for years.

Truth be told, scoffing our way through arrival day sparked a quiet moment of reflection as we wandered back to the lodge under starry skies. Life’s too short for bland nosh and rushed trips; here, with full bellies and that cabin glow, I realised it’s these simple feasts—market hauls, pub classics, botched-but-brilliant home cooks—that make a holiday stick.
