About Pembrokeshire
I finally made it to that cosy 1 Bed Lodge in Redberth after a drive that was equal parts scenic and sodding infuriating. We'd set off from Tenby early afternoon, windows down, radio blasting some classic Oasis tracks to get us in the holiday mood—me, my partner Sarah, and our cheeky five-year-old, Finn. Pembrokeshire's roads are a dream on a good day, twisting through those lush green hills dotted with sheep that look like they've got all the time in the world. But no, our journey kicked off with the most daft mishap: about five minutes in, Finn decided his crisp packet was the perfect catapult for his toy dinosaur. Cue a full-on crisp explosion across the dashboard, crumbs everywhere like we'd been in a flour fight. I pulled over near Carew, swearing under my breath while Sarah laughed her head off and Finn proclaimed it "the best game ever." Classic family chaos—nothing says holiday like starting with a car that smells faintly of cheese and onion.

By the time we trundled up the lane to Redberth, the sun was dipping low, painting the sky in those soft Pembrokeshire pinks and oranges that make you forget the A-road skirmishes. The lodge popped into view like a hug from an old mate—compact, wooden-clad, nestled in a quiet spot with fields rolling out behind it. It's one of those proper little hides, just us three in a one-bed setup that's spot-on for a chilled family break. We parked on the gravel patch (crunching tyres adding to the rustic charm), and Finn bolted out, yelling about spotting a "mega snail" by the steps. First impressions? Blissfully unpretentious. No grand entrance, just a sturdy door that swung open to reveal a lounge that's all squashy sofas, a telly for rainy days, and a kitchenette kitted out with everything you'd need for beans on toast or a full Welsh breakfast fry-up.

Stepping inside felt like slipping into slippers after a long walk—warm, welcoming, with that faint woody scent that screams "lodge life." Sarah clocked the king-sized bed straight away through the bedroom door, grinning like it'd been purpose-built for her post-drive nap. Finn, meanwhile, claimed the sofa bed as his "pirate ship" in about two seconds flat, complete with cushions as cannons. We dumped the bags and cracked open the complimentary tea and biccies—proper builder's brew, none of your fancy herbal nonsense. Sat there sipping, watching the light fade over the garden, I couldn't help a little chuckle at how we'd gone from crisp apocalypse to this serene bubble in under an hour. The place is surrounded by that classic Pembrokeshire peace: birds cheeping, distant cows mooing, and not a soul in sight unless you count the odd tractor rumbling past.

First evening was pure simple pleasures. We pottered about unpacking—Finn's idea of unpacking being to scatter his toys like confetti—then whipped up pasta in the compact kitchen. The dining spot's right by the window, so we ate with a view of the twilight fields, chatting nonsense about what adventures tomorrow might bring. No big plans, just the vibe of being tucked away in Redberth, close enough to pop over to Gun Point Battery if the fancy took us, or wander the nearby paths for a bit of coastal air. There's a gentle slope down to some open green space behind the lodge, perfect for Finn to burn off steam chasing shadows while Sarah and I cracked a couple of tins of cider, toasting to doing bugger all.

As we settled in that night, fairy lights twinkling from the patio (a lovely touch for stargazing), I had one of those quiet reflective moments. Here we were, in this tiny Pembrokeshire gem, far from the daily grind, and it hit me how these little lodges nail it—reminding you that happiness isn't about five-star frippery, but crisps in the car, kid-sized chaos, and a bed that feels like home after five minutes. First impressions sealed: we'd struck gold for our three-day escape. Can't wait to see what the next morning brings.
