About Pembrokeshire
Pulling up to the 1 Bed Lodge just outside Narberth felt like stumbling into a hug from an old mate. It's one of those proper Pembrokeshire gems – a cosy little timber-clad haven tucked into a quiet spot with nothing but birdsong and the odd bleat from nearby sheep for company. The owners had left the key in the door (bless 'em), and as I stepped inside, the first thing that hit me was the wood-burning stove, all ready with a stack of logs and a cheeky "light me up" vibe. After wrestling my damp bag through the door, I flopped onto the squishy sofa and thought, yeah, this is exactly what I needed. First impressions? Pure bliss. The lodge is tiny but perfect for one – or a solo traveller like me pretending to be on a grand escape. Open-plan living with a kitchenette that's got everything from a Nespresso machine (hero status) to a proper oven for lazy bakes. The bed? King-sized, fluffy duvet, and views straight out to the garden. I arrived mid-afternoon on a drizzly Friday, so my big plan was to do bugger all. Brewed a cuppa, cracked open my battered copy of some Welsh folklore book I'd picked up in Narberth town earlier that week, and just sat there listening to the rain patter on the roof. It's funny how, after months of London hustle, the joy of doing precisely nothing feels like the height of luxury. The garden sealed the deal. Enclosed and wildish, with a couple of weathered benches, pots of herbs gone leggy from neglect, and a bird feeder swinging gently. I spent that first evening wrapped in a blanket out there, watching robins dart about as the sun dipped behind the Preseli Hills. No rush, no itinerary – just me, a thermos of tea, and the kind of peace that makes you realise how wired you've been. Dinner was equally effortless: raided the local Narberth Farm Shop on the way in (it's only a couple of minutes' drive, stocked with Pembrokeshire cheeses and fresh bread that could make a saint weep), slapped together a ploughman's, and ate it on the patio as the light faded. Laughed at myself when a cheeky squirrel nicked a bit of apple core right from under my nose. Saturday morning brought more of the same slow magic. Woke to mist rolling off the nearby woods – we're talking classic Pembrokeshire damp, the sort that makes everything smell alive. No alarm, just birds. Pootered about in the kitchen making porridge with local honey, then back to the sofa with my book. The lodge has this brilliant skylight over the bed, so even on a grey day, there's light filtering in like it's whispering "stay put". I did venture out briefly – a gentle wander along the quiet lanes to Narberth's high street, maybe a mile away. Popped into the indie bookshop for a Welsh poetry collection and grabbed pasties from the bakery. Back by noon, boots kicked off, and straight into garden lounging. Feet up, reading verses about ancient bards while the world slowed to a crawl. By Sunday, as I packed up reluctantly, I had a proper moment of reflection. Staring at the stove's embers, I realised I'd spent three days achieving sweet FA, and it was brilliant. In a life of to-do lists and notifications, this lodge taught me that joy's in the pause – the nothing-much that recharges everything. If you're after Pembrokeshire without the crowds, book this spot. It's not grand; it's better. |
