About North Wales
I finally made it to Withy Willows after a bit of a faff on the A49, dodging those cheeky Shropshire sheep that seem to think the road's their personal picnic spot. Picture this: me, the wife, and our two lads crammed into the car with enough snacks to feed a rugby team, when – splat! – a rogue bird decides to redecorate the windscreen just as we're cresting that hill near Craven Arms. "Brilliant," I muttered, wiping it off with a half-eaten Greggs pasty while the kids howled with laughter. Proper family holiday start, that.

Pulling up to Withy Willows around teatime felt like stumbling into a hug from an old mate. Tucked away in this peaceful Shropshire nook, just a stone's throw from the Welsh border, it's one of those hot tub lodges that promises "glamping without the glamour" – and delivers spot on. The lane wound through lush meadows, with the Long Mynd's misty humps peeking in the distance, and suddenly there she was: a cosy wooden haven with fairy lights twinkling like they'd been waiting just for us. We tumbled out, bags flying, and the first whiff of woodsmoke from the patio chiminea hit me – pure bliss after hours on the road.

Unlocking the door was like cracking open a treasure chest of lodge life. Inside, it was all exposed beams, squishy sofas, and that faint, comforting scent of fresh linen. The open-plan living space screamed "kick back and forget the world" – a telly bigger than our living room wall back home, and a kitchen stocked with everything from posh tea bags to a dishwasher that practically high-fived me. The lads bolted straight for their bunk-bed room, yelling about who gets the top bunk, while I snuck a peek at the master suite. King-sized bed? Check. En-suite with a rainfall shower that could wash away a week's worth of worries? Double check. But the real star? That private hot tub on the decking, bubbling away under a canopy of stars, with views over rolling fields dotted with grazing horses.

First impressions? It was love at first sight, laced with the glorious chaos of family life. We cracked open a bottle of fizz (non-alcoholic for the under-16s, obvs), and while Sarah sorted supper – fish fingers and chips, because posh can wait – I fired up the chiminea. The kids turned it into a den-building frenzy with the outdoor cushions, dragging them everywhere until one vanished under a pile of wellies. "Dad, it's alive!" shrieked little Tom as it toppled over. I couldn't help but chuckle; here we were, miles from the daily grind, rediscovering the joy in daft, muddy mayhem.

As the sun dipped behind the hills, painting the sky in those dramatic Welsh-border pinks and oranges, we piled into the hot tub. Jets roaring, steam rising, toes wrinkling – it was perfection. The peace was palpable; no traffic hum, just birdsong and the odd low from a nearby cow. That's when I had a quiet moment, bubbles tickling my chin, thinking how these simple setups like Withy Willows strip life back to its best bits. No five-star fuss, just us lot, together, giggling over nothing. In the rush of school runs and deadlines, I'd forgotten how restorative a proper unplug can be – a gentle nudge that happiness hides in hot tubs and half-arsed den disasters.

By bedtime, with the lodge glowing softly and the Shropshire night wrapping around us like a quilt, I knew we'd nailed it. Withy Willows wasn't just a stay; it was the kick-off to three days of lodge-lounging heaven, starting with the coziest first night imaginable. Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings – probably more bird poo, knowing our luck.
