About North Wales
I finally made it to Wilderness Lodge in North Wales after what felt like the scenic route from hell. I'd set off from Shrewsbury early that Friday morning, buzzing with excitement for my three-day escape to this cosy Snailbeach cottage. North Wales has that magnetic pull, doesn't it? Those rolling Shropshire hills giving way to the wild Welsh borders, with Snowdonia lurking just beyond. But of course, nothing goes smoothly when you're me. About five miles out, just past some sleepy village with a pub that looked like it hadn't changed since the '70s, my sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly. "Recalculating," it chirped cheerily, before leading me down a single-track lane that narrowed into a goat path. I ended up reversing into a hedge – yes, really – with blackthorn scratching my wing mirror like it had a personal grudge. A local farmer in a flat cap chuckled as he towed me out with his tractor. "First time in these parts, love?" he said. Cheeky sod. Twenty minutes later, covered in a fine dusting of hedge confetti, I pulled up to the lodge, heart still thumping.

The chaos melted away the second I stepped through the door. Wilderness Lodge isn't some flashy hotel; it's a proper Welsh border gem, tucked into the hills near Snailbeach with views that make you forget the world. First impressions? Bloody brilliant. The owner, a lovely chap called Dai, handed over the keys with a mug of tea and a slab of bara brith – proper Welsh hospitality. Inside, it was all low beams, stone walls, and that faint, comforting whiff of woodsmoke from the log burner. The living room opened straight onto a patio overlooking the valley, where sheep dotted the green like fluffy exclamation marks. I dumped my bags and just stood there, gobsmacked. After the hedge debacle, this felt like stumbling into a hug.

I kicked off with a wander around the garden – it's wild in the best way, with herb beds and a fire pit begging for marshmallows later. The air was crisp, laced with that earthy North Wales scent of damp grass and distant rain. Spotting a cheeky robin bossing the bird feeder, I couldn't help but laugh. If only my sat-nav had half its directional sense. Popped the kettle on (proper whistling one, none of your fancy pods) and cracked open a window to let the breeze in. The views! Miles of undulating hills, with the Stiperstones peeking over like ancient fingers pointing to the sky. It's the kind of place that whispers "slow down" without saying a word.

First evening, I rustled up supper in the compact kitchen – everything you need, from a solid Aga-style cooker to quirky mugs with sheep puns. Grilled some local sausages I'd nabbed from a farm shop en route (pre-hedge, thankfully) with cheddar mash. Ate on the patio as the sun dipped, painting the hills gold. A buzzard circled lazily overhead, and I swear the stars started twinkling before it was even dark. No light pollution here; it's proper wilderness.

That night, snuggled under a quilt thicker than my nan's jumpers, I reflected on the day. Here I was, a city escapee who'd just survived a botanical ambush, now cocooned in this slice of heaven. It's funny how a daft mishap sharpens the joy – makes you appreciate the quiet magic of places like Wilderness Lodge. The creak of the floorboards, the hush of the wind through the oaks outside... it all felt like coming home. Can't wait to explore more tomorrow, but honestly, this arrival? Perfection wrapped in a bit of chaos. If you're after first impressions that stick, book it. You won't regret it.
