About North Wales
Pulling up to Wigmore Meadow View around teatime on Friday, I was knackered but buzzing. The place is a proper gem: a cosy stone cottage hugging a meadow, with a veranda screaming for a GandT at sunset. But before I’d even unpacked, out pops Mrs. Evans from the neighbouring farm – she’s the owner’s mum, I reckon, mid-70s with a perm that defies gravity and wellies that have seen more action than a rugby scrum. “You the London lad?” she hollers, eyeing my mud-spattered Golf like it’s an alien spaceship. I nod, grinning, and she thrusts a basket of fresh eggs into my arms. “Don’t go wasting these on fancy scramblin’. Fry ’em proper, like.” Her accent’s pure Welsh valleys, thick as clotted cream, and she’s off on a tangent about how the fox got her best hen last week. “Sly as a politician, he was!” We chat for 20 minutes by the garden gate – me leaning on the car, her propped on a pitchfork – and she regales me with tales of the village ghost, a spectral shepherd who apparently haunts the pub on full moons. I’m half-convinced she’s winding me up, but her eyes sparkle with mischief. By the time she waves me off with a “Ta-ra, mind the bats at dusk!”, I’m already smitten with the place’s charm. No sooner had I lugged my bags inside – past the Aga-warm kitchen and those epic meadow views through the bifold doors – than there’s a knock. It’s Dai, the milkman-cum-handyman, a wiry chap in his 50s with a beard like a Brillo pad and a van plastered in rugby stickers. He’s there to “check the boiler, like,” but really, it’s an excuse for a natter. Over a cuppa (his insistence – “Proper builder’s brew, none of that leafy nonsense”), he launches into the local lore. “See that hill yonder? That’s where Mad Tom buried his gold in ’52. Still diggin’ for it, the daft sods are.” Dai’s a born storyteller, hands waving like windmills, and he’s got me in stitches recounting how the village fete nearly went pear-shaped when the beer tent collapsed mid-song. “Everyone sang on, mind – that’s Welsh spirit for ya!” His humour’s dry as a crisp, but warm underneath, and he even sorts my wonky Wi-Fi router before vanishing with a wink: “Don’t tell the wife I nicked your biscuits.” As dusk fell that first evening, supping a pint on the veranda, I reflected gently on how these encounters hit home. Back in the rat race, I’m all emails and deadlines, but here, chatting with Mrs. Evans and Dai felt like slipping into a well-worn cardie – comforting, unpretentious. It’s the people who make a spot like Wigmore Meadow View sing, turning a simple arrival into stories I’ll dine out on for months. North Wales, you’ve got me hooked. |
