About North Wales
Pulling up to the lodge that first afternoon, I was chuffed to bits. Tucked away in a quiet corner of Powys, just a stone’s throw from Llandrindod Wells, it’s the sort of pet-friendly haven that feels like a secret handshake from the universe. My dog, Monty, was straight out the car, tail wagging like a metronome on speed, while I unloaded the boot and took in the views – rolling hills dipping into a lush valley that screamed “get lost in me.” The lodge itself? Cosy as a Welsh hug: wooden beams, a cracking wood burner (unlit, but promising), and a patio that backed right onto nature’s own playground. First impressions? Spot on for a solo wanderer like me – no frills, all charm, and that rare breed of quiet where you can actually hear birdsong instead of traffic. But the joy kicked off proper when I decided to “just pop out for a quick walk” with Monty. No map, no plan – just trainers on and off we went, veering left instead of right because, why not? Within minutes, we’d ditched the main path and found ourselves on a barely-there trail snaking along the Ithon Valley’s edge. It’s mad how North Wales hides these pockets – a babbling brook hidden behind a copse of ancient oaks, sunlight dappling the water like fairy dust. We paddled about, Monty splashing like a furry torpedo, and I plonked down on a mossy rock for a brew from my flask. No crowds, no signs – just us and the whisper of wind through the bracken. Felt like we’d gatecrashed Eden. Emboldened, I let curiosity lead the next morning. Another accidental detour – this time chasing a glimpse of what looked like a forgotten stone bridge through the trees – took us to a tucked-away waterfall you’d never spot on Google. Tucked maybe a mile from the lodge, it’s one of those off-the-beaten-track stunners: water tumbling 20 feet into a crystal pool, surrounded by ferns so lush they could star in a Tolkien flick. I sat there gobsmacked, chuckling at how I’d nearly walked past it, nose in my phone. Monty had a dip, emerging like a drowned rat, and we picnicked on cheese butties overlooking the spray. Pure bliss, that – the sort of find that makes you grin like an idiot. By day two’s ramble, getting lost had become the plan. We bushwhacked (gently, mind) up a sheep-dotted hillside, unearthing a wildflower meadow that bloomed riotously in purples and yellows, alive with butterflies. It was one of those moments that stopped me in my tracks – sat there with Monty snoring beside me, I had a proper think. Life back home’s a whirlwind of deadlines and doom-scrolling; out here, accidentally off-grid, I realised how much I’d missed this simplicity. No signal, no rush – just the pleasure of wandering, discovering North Wales’ quiet secrets one happy blunder at a time. Valley View Lodge Pet nailed it as a base for these serendipitous jaunts – close enough to Llandrindod’s chippy for emergencies, but worlds away in vibe. If you fancy trading sat-nav for serendipity, it’s the spot. Me and Monty? We’re already plotting a return. |
