About North Wales
Pulling up to Tryweryn just outside Bala felt like stumbling into a hug from an old mate. Tucked into a peaceful spot overlooking the River Tryweryn – that gentle rush of water you can hear from the deck – it’s the sort of riverside lodge that screams “relaxed family break.” Hot tub bubbling away like it was waiting for us, wood-burner ready for chilly evenings, and those massive windows framing the wild Welsh countryside. We’d booked it for that proper lodge life vibe: no posh hotel fuss, just us lot unwinding in our own slice of paradise. The kids bolted out first, Finn yelling about spotting fish in the river, while my wife, Sarah, and I hauled the bags up the steps, grinning like idiots at the fresh mountain air hitting us. First impressions? Bloody brilliant. Stepping inside was like the property had read our minds. Cosy lounge with plush sofas that swallowed you whole – perfect for sprawling out after the drive. The kitchen was a dream for lazy self-catering: stocked with all the basics, and that Aga-style cooker begging for bacon butties. We dumped our stuff and cracked open the complimentary Welsh cider (cheers to that touch), toasting our arrival as the sun dipped low over the Dee Valley. The deck became command central straight away. Feet up, hot tub jets massaging away the road stress, and the kids splashing about in the shallow river bit just steps away. “Don’t fall in!” I hollered, half-serious, remembering Finn’s crisp chaos. But there’s something magical about that lodge life disorder – the towels trailing mud, the echo of giggles bouncing off the wooden walls. It’s chaos, but the good kind, the kind that makes you forget emails and deadlines. As the evening light faded, we fired up the barbecue (gas, thank god – no faffing with damp logs), grilling local sausages from Bala’s farm shop we’d nipped into on the way. Sausages, baps, and a side of coleslaw that Sarah whipped up – simple pleasures that taste a million times better with that river soundtrack. The older kids, Mia and Jack, claimed the board games from the shelf, battling over Cluedo while Finn chased glow bugs (or what he swore were dragons). Me? I snuck a moment on the deck, pint in hand, watching the water weave its way towards Llyn Tegid. Gentle self-reflection hit me then: how often do we chase far-flung adventures when this – mud on the boots, family squabbles over the last sausage, the quiet hum of Welsh wilderness – is the real recharge? Tryweryn nailed it from minute one. No grand plans needed; just us, the lodge, and that effortless North Wales magic wrapping around like a cosy blanket. If you’re after a family bolt-hole that delivers instant bliss, this is your spot. Can’t wait to go back. |
